I pressed the menu button and the phone button for 3 seconds and enter the code 917 ,as a jag tecnician explained me to do to check the program version used a few years ago, after updating the programm,I noticed the option : lights on during the day has disapeared, (instead I am getting a button to set a digital clock ) and it was on before the update. So now I am with the light during the day and can not use the automatic function so well...or all the lights are on all the time.
The dealership do not know what to do now.
I contacted a tecnician he said to try to disconnect the batterie 10 mn.
Nothing happened i am still with the last available update.
Any idea or help will be welcome.(last lift 2008 ,Dec 2007 car)

Hi ,i do not even know for sure what it has updated if it is the Map ,the clock or other things,i will say don't do it .lol. Use these code to run a self check, when you go to buy one or for a test drive,or on yours. It used to work well on the xjr 2004,i guess it works on 2003 model, here the x 350 started in 2003.you may have another update possible that coudl be good to do,ask the dealer first here often they don't even care about it unless you complain. It may not change anything and while all works why trying ,which is correct...there was many issues that are solved with updates, maybe it also brings others problem aparently....so you decide...

No, those codes are not the same, at least not on my 2007 XJ8.
The screen does look quite similar, but the 917 code shows the software version, and the 1971 code gives you access to system diagnostics and messages.
Makes me wonder if there are other codes, and where we might find documentation on what each one can do?

According to a TSB you should be able to put the instrument panel in to diagnostic mode but it doesn't work on my car:
New XJ (up-to X358) Instrument Cluster Self-Diagnostic ETM
To place the cluster in ETM, perform the following:
1. Press and hold the stalk trip cycle button whilst turning the ignition from position 0 to position II, until 'ENGINEERING TEST MODE’ is displayed
on the RH Message Centre display. The stalk trip cycle button must be released within three seconds of 'ENGINEERING TEST MODE’ being displayed
or the instrument cluster will e it Self-Diagnostic
mode.
2. To navigate forward through the instrument cluster Self-Diagnostic Mode tests, press the trip computer ‘MLS/KMS’ button.
3. To navigate backward through the instrument cluster Self-Diagnostic Mode tests, press the trip computer ‘A/B’ button.
4. To exit Self-Diagnostic Mode, press the stalk trip cycle button for more than three seconds.

This has worked very well on several X-Types but does not work on my 2008 XJ8.
From TSB JTB00014:

5. The Self-Diagnostic Mode is also deactivated when the ignition switch is turned to the 'OFF' position, or low battery voltage is detected.
6. If the Self-Diagnostic Mode cannot be accessed repeat the above paying particular care to the sequence timing.
NOTE: ETM is not available on X358. If ETM is not available use IDS/WDS to diagnose the instrument cluster.
Sadly, ETM does not work on 2008/2009 XJ.
Best regards,
Bill
