I got a little ahead of myself with the Rochester Valve. The XJS' have them, I'm not sure if the XJ6 do. Someone else will chime in.

In the meantime, you're going to have to check that tank! Make sure you don't have a rotted, or disconnected hose somewhere. There's some gaskets you'll need to get a hold of. If the stink is coming from the tank, best make sure it's not an easy fix before you spend the time and money on pulling out the tank and getting it refurnished.

Head over to https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/ and see what you'll be looking at. Its a great resource for diagrams and part numbers, even if they are no longer available, you at least know how you might find it on eBay.

@Vee I checked out that site. Very nice resource indeed. The parts list and diagrams are very helpful. Thanks very much.

Tackling the gas tank is not going to be fun. I still have to find out who can recondition it for me here in Phoenix.

Another question is that I see there are two different crankshaft position sensor. One the unit that mounts like the distributor and the other is mounted by the crankshaft pulley.
Do they both control the ignition system?

The one that looks like and is mounted like a distributor is the camshaft position sensor.
The one at the front of the engine at the crankshaft pulley is the crankshaft position sensor.
Both sensors are used by engine management. In my experience the camshaft position sensor is reliable but the crankshaft position sensor is not.

Thanks everybody for chiming in. I feel like I got a lot of valuable information about the car and I am hoping to drive and enjoy it hopefully.
Much regards

Safe to say that the X300 is an OLD car now and will have those old car moments when parts fail. Usually it is not something major so you keep replacing what fails asap before anything else fails! You must be familliar with this way of life with your "very old" MB cars.

I concur with Vee, carry a spare coil and a spare CKPS in the car. Best to put in a new genuine CKPS and keep the old one as a spare, and do it now because your car is old.

My six had a fuel odor for some time and that turned out to be the fuel gauge sender seal. An easy fix! Also yes the car has a rochester valve, under the car near the vapor canister (I think). Check all those rubber hoses, they live in a harsh environment, and they are old!

Drive it like it will never quit. It might once in a while, but thats no big deal when you drive and old car.

Also: I thought of one more obvious module, the Airbag module. Airbag warning is most likely due to module failure. Ford modules from the era are used in our cars. There is also a module for the sunroof!
