So let use focus on the starter rotation first
The body processor module sums some agreements and then it ( BPM ) provides a ground to close the starter solenoid relay for starter rotation
Your 3.2 liter with the slightly different transmission does not have a rotary switch on the transmission body itself but is like the V - 12
Looking for picture of print I made
This will be a pic of the more common / similar 4.0 liter same inline 6
Notice the linier switch ( ? )

To know that you have all the agreements for starter rotation the starter solenoid relay ( large left # 4 ) must click closed by key in start position
You have to put your finger on it instead of listening as other relays in the area will click
Your 3.2 liter starter circuit ( linier switch should be in there ) will be on page 48 and will look at the jumpering of the linier switch

Red / Blue wire must go to car frame ground

well first of all thank you so much for taking the time for all this info butthe switch down my the gear lever is where my problem lays no question about that, so this last image you sent is that explaining how to bypass the switch all together or explaining where a relay for the switch is, i did say complicated didnt i !! . so am i right in thinking find that relay earth it out to the car body and that will bypass the linear switch or have i got this 100% wrong sorry for my ignorance

The Red / Blue wire on the linier switch to car frame ground is your jumper
The only relay is the starter solenoid relay under the hood
You can keep the jumper wire on the Red / Blue wire and drive the car , just don't start it out of the park position
Keeping the jumper installed and connected will not drain the battery
Since you will later be removing the linier switch ( fun rear bolts with a torque bit set if I recall , look first ) you can open the switch and clean with rubbing alcohol and later a pencil eraser . give the delicate fingers a slight twist to make better contact
The upgraded linier switch may be hard to find in a salvage yard on a donor car ( if it's been upgraded , or the reason the car is in the salvage yard , look for wreck as reason for being there ) ) but here are some numbers
Item 29
You have the ZF4HP22 transmission on the 3.2 lier X300 which you will notice it does not list so it is the wrong XJ model and not X300
Genuine Gear Change Control-automatic (6 Speed Auto Transmission Zf 6hp28,6 Speed Auto Zf 6hp26 Steptronic, automatic) For Jaguar Xj 1995 - 1997 (from 720125 To 812255) (x300) Classic | Jaguar Land Rover Classic Parts
So your easiest bet is to clean inside the existing switch ( drink spills )
Same amount of work to remove and clean the linier switch as the jumper makeup

Do not install new battery in backwards
You can jumper to Black wire ( car frame ground ) with a paper clip on the same connector as the Red / Blue wire at the linier switch
So the paper clop would be from Black to Red / Blue
The Black wire will be in one of the corners of the connector as the # 1 position

dont think i would make a mistake of putting the battery in backwards, so a paper clip wire from earth of car body on to the connector red and blue wire which i assume is a earth anyways im just improving or making a full contact do i have this right mate sorry for all these questions, you wouldnt think it would be so hard to buy another linear switch as there were a lots of these jags made for sure

You can take the paper clip from the connector on the linier switch that has the Red / Blue wire to the same connector that has the Black wire
The Red / Blue wire will have power on it ( this should be key position dependent ) and is ground seeking to make the starter work
You can order a linier switch from a salvage yard with the pic above from Mark Oliver or E - bay
Whether the donor switch works or not is a craps shoot as that part has not been tested or new
There is a device in the dash above referred to as a linier something that is an enable for the ignition switch chip in key
So the location pic is important
