Default 1995 XJR6 transmussion issue

Hi everyone,

I just picked up a 95 XJR6 the body and engine are in good condition but tranny shifts hard..

When car is turned on and 1st driven that 1st shift hits really hard.. After that is alot better but still not smooth.. Also the check tranny light comes on the dash but goes away when car shut off.

I tried to search and read up on the issues of hard shifting.. Seems like some ppl have issues w the rear tranny mount and that causes tge wire harness to break or strech..

I have a few questions if you guys can help out..

1. Whats the best way to read the tranny trouble code light on dash

2. Any pointers what to check for any suggestions?

3. If I had to replace the tranny.. What would fit in there direct fit..
I see alot of used transmissions from the ex300 on ebay for $300 w 6month warranty

Thanks

Mine to....but perhaps only once per month, if that often. Never knew why.

Not quite sure if I follow. All the wrning lights turn off when the car is shut off, don't they?

A known problem, worth checking and correcting

If you like DIY work you might as well invest in a scan tool. I use an Innova 3130 at home....good enough for the basics. Many, many other choices out there.

Many auto parts outlets (Checker, Autozone, O'Reilly, etc) will read the trouble codes for you

Besides the mount/wiring issue already mentioned it's best to wait for the trouble codes. That should give some direction.

You have a GM 4L80E transmission with a Jaguar-specific case. The only direct fit would be a tranny from a 1995-97 XJR or a Jag with the 6.0L V12

Doug thanx for reply..

I meant like if you restart the car the light would shut off untill its put in gear and driven.

Spoke to a local guy who works on Jags and hes sure the tranny went ..

I found a tranny from a 96 V12 jag for $500 probably going to buy that and see my luck.

I took the car to a muffler shop today to get a leak fixed. While on lift I checked underneath and found that the tranny mount was shot.. So bad that you could move the tranny around with your big tumb and chunks of rubber where falling out the mount..

Double check the bolt pattern just in case I'm wrong !

But before buying *any* trans check the wiring. If your mount is that bad the wiring is probably damagd and a likely cause of the problem. It's pretty common.

Just to update everyone,

I got the tranny from a 94 V12 w 60k on it car had fire damage

Tranny bolted on and its the same thing except the rear of the tranny where the nose it.. That very end part that hold the tanny mount was different and needed to be swaped from old gearbox.. Its very simple 5 bolts and comes right out..

Other then that its the same if people ever wondered for the future..

Car drives great now
