1996 XJ6 - Check Engine Light Issue
Hi
I posted this issue on the incorrect thread in here yesterday, but am reposting in the X300 forum to hopefully fix this issue.
Our 1996 XJ6 Vanden Plas check engine light is on and we can't get it to go off. I took it to a mechanic I've known for a few years and he says his "system" won't communicate w/ an older system like what we have.
Any advice on what kind of diagnostic tool we should buy or where we can take it to get the code(s) read and hopefully cleared?
Thanks

About any local auto parts store will read the codes and reset them but you have to tell them that you do have a check engine light
To do it yourself there is a ELM - 327 device on E - bay that you can read and reset the codes and beyond that it willread individual engine sensor valves as you drive around and record it as a live data graph.
You can see your codes here on page 121

Youtube video on how the ELM - 327 device works , there is a much better video somewhere.
You can get them in Bluetooth for your smart phone od USB line for your laptop.

I get mine from eBay.
If you have an iPhone, you need the WiFi dongle.
If you use an Android, the Bluetooth dongle will work as well.
You will not be able to pull ABS nor Transmission codes. For that you'll need something that can pull Jag specific codes. The iCarSoft i930 seems to be the cheapest thing around that can do that.

Just make sure when you read the code you actually pay attention to what it is and look to address it.
too many idiots (not anyone particular here) see “check engine light” and literally do that, check what it says, then clear it.
and hope it stays away.
like “yep, i checked it, i know its broken.”
😂🤣
