Default 1996 xj6 throttle body removal

For about a month now when I let off the throttle my car does not slow down at all and I have to give it a little tap for rpm's to drop. I've put a little fuel injection cleaner in the gas and it has helped slightly but I want to really get in there and clean it off. I've checked all over the forum for some removal instructions but can't seem to find any. Can someone give me some directions on how to do it and what tools I would need? Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is a TSB showing that there is an updated/stronger throttle return spring that you may need. Unless your butterfly plate is really gummed up and sticking heavily I'm willing to bet the spring is your main culprit.

As for the throttle body removal it's not difficult once you pull the airbox snorkel and such out of the way. Disconnect the cables and unplug the sensors on it and remove the bolts mounting it to the plenum. Make sure you have a new throttle body mounting gasket on hand for when reinstalling it

Remove air intate connected from air box(where air filter is)loosen rubber bellows to thottlebody and remove from car,un hook thottle cable(be careful not to loose the c clip from cruise linkage)(to unhook cable, turn back by hand, pull cable around to slot and lift up)Unplug electrical connectors,There are (4)10mm bolts you will need to remove,if the 1996 has the water line attached remove the forward side and plug it with (1) of the bolts(just screw it in a bit)and don't forget the rear line(you will not loose to much coolant) remove thottle body, clean it with thottle body or carburtor cleaner using a tooth brush,Q tips ,and clean rags. install in reverse as removal,be sure to instal thottle cable before you bolt on the thottle body so you will not have remove it because it does come really close to the EGR valve, there is not a gaskit between the thottle and intake.besure the thottle returns to stop position(even if you need to ajust the cable look bolts that hold the cable in place.

Good info there. And yes I made a mistake thinking there was a throttle body gasket on our cars (I was thinking of my '97 Maxima). Throttle body gaskets exist on the 1997-1998 XJ8's and XK8's, but not on our X300's

Can someone please send me a link to the TSB about the new return spring? I can't seem to find it.

It's located in the ECM/PROM update for the updated EGR valve (Recall T493). Under that recall part of the procedure was to also replace the throttle return spring with a stronger spring to prevent high idle speeds/sticking throttle at the same time as the new PROM chip and updated self cleaning EGR valve was installed. If you can, try to find out if your vehicle ever received these updates

My recommendation is to either remove the TPS or invert the throttle assy so chemicals do not get into the potentiometer when you wet the throttle bore with solvent. The throttle is not difficult to remove. An old toothbrush will remove deposits.

If it's not on carfax try checking the inside of your driver's door. Most the time if the EGR update was performed they installed a sticker saying so. On the inside of my '95 the dealer placed a sticker indicating the PROM update with new EGR and updated throttle return spring was added

I believe I saw a sticker there that said I did get it but I?m not sure. I?ve heard a lot of people talking about just winding it around one more time or was that before the update? If not then which way should I turn it?

I went and checked and my car does not have the update. Can I wind the spring around one more time or am I better off getting it updated?

The spring won't go one more round. You can unwind the end of the spring that is straight 1/2 turn, cut off a little and THEN wind it one more round. That will put more tension on the throttle and return it to idle unless the bore is extremely carboned.

Would this be "generally" applicable to a X308 where some stiffening of the pedal is desired?

This is interesting. I never came across this recall and I doubt it's been done on my XJR6. Any Jaguar dealership will still honor this recall?

I've been meaning to take apart and clean the throttle body on my car sooner than not for peace of mind/preventative maintenance reasons. Once in a great while my pedal will stick a bit and sometimes when I first start it (cold) the RPMs will go up/down, but your normal person would never notice it's so minimal. I'm just **** and look at all my gauges when I start the car.

The EGR valve was something I had to replace on my 93 XJ6 around 85K miles.

I read through the above mentioned PDF files regarding the recall. It appears I could give my local dealership a call and they'll replace the spring & EGR valve as well as update the PROM.

Is this something that is mandatory or should I just give Jaguar a call and take advantage of the fact this is free parts/labor for a recall?

jhxj6 and Full Throttle, send me a PM with your VIN# and we'll find out whether the recall has been claimed on your cars. I'd be surprised if it hasn't.

Cheers,

You probably won't find the EPROMS at any dealers anymore. I found a box of them in the trash around 2005 when I worked at the Dealer. I guess the recall expired, Jaguar Parts did not want them returned to the warehouse and told the Dealers to scrap them!!!

You will find the STICKER on the ECM case housing if the Recall 493 was performed.

This was a Recall, and Recalls don't expire. PROM sets and the other associated parts still show available though Jaguar Parts. If one shows up, we are still obligated to make the repair per the Recall. I just haven't run across one that hasn't already been completed in ages.

Cheers,

Need more Dan.......

You mean the two small coolant hoses to the throttle body??

Supercharged or non-supercharged?? Are you are talking about a 6 cylinder; or is it a V8?? We can't take a chance and assume, that gets people into trouble.

Cheers,
