1996 xj6 Vanden Plas Stalled after running perfectly
My XJ6 was running perfectly then suddenly stalled....It wont start again. Not an issue with the battery and starter. (Both are new) Starter rotates the engine normally.
No check engine light (yet) Lots of fuel...
The # 1 fuel pump relay will click in your fingers 3 times on for 3 seconds - off- on in the starting sequence
You will only have # 1 fuel pump as # 2 is for supercharged and V - 12
There are 2 other relays to place your finger on with relay swapping options
Small relay # 9 right engine fuse box ( ignition positive relay as 1st power for the ECU )
Large relay # right 5 called the ECU controlled relay ( this is your 2nd power to the ECU needed at all times )
By rotating the key but not having starter rotation the fuel pump relay will click only twice , on - off , the 3rd click comes from the CKPS seeing engine rotation for the duration of your drive , safety design
the other 2 relays will click to the closed position
For single person operation leave the key in the run position and remove the 2 later relays and they should click in your fingertips back open relay position
The fuel pump relay should have clicked for the 3 seconds and already be off but from the cabin you may hear the 3 seconds fuel pump running
In your photograph, you indicate a #2 fuel pump . The yellow line points a a small white connector. Is this the relay or are you referring to the bit underneath? I've jumped the 1st relay....but only hear a very faint hum. Not sure thats the fuel pump...Still no start withe jump wire in the relay socket.
The # 2 fuel pump is on the supercharged and V - 12 only
They both have the same fuse as the yellow line
The hum you heard is most likely the fuel pump running and you may have heard a gurgle of fuel returning to the tank from the fuel pressure regulator above the engine
Both engine compartment relays swapped, and inertia switch reset ?
I am trying to reset the inertia switch. Not that sure is functioning correctly. The switch button seems loose. I push it down but it feels flimsy. I'm thinking of taking it off and jumping (bridging) the power wires for continuity.

If it seems flimsy, that probably means it has not tripped.
I'm going to guess its the crankshaft position sensor. It's a common failure and a replacement is not expensive and relatively easy to do yourself.
When you say the car has plenty of fuel, you hadn’t just refuelled by any chance?
Or been caught in a downpour?
Water in the tank is what I am wondering…
To get around any issues with the fuel do you get some ignition with some starter fluid ?
This would verify the crankshaft position sensor and the ECU being powered up ( somewhat )
The large right # 5 ECU control relay powers the fuel injectors ( and returns power back to the ECU as your 2nd power needed at all times ) but the starter fluid would bypass that , just no 2nd power
Your 1st power is the ignition positive small relay # 9 in the corner of the right engine bay fuse box clicking closed
