1996 XJ6 (X300) Hard starting - RESOLVED
We have a 1996 XJ6 that requires movement of the throttle to make it start. If it were carburetted I would say it's flooded. I have checked the timing sensor, spark plugs and coils, cleaned the throttle body and egr valve, checked the connections at all the control computers and ????
This has happened since the 100,000 mile service, and I am now at wits end! This car is wonderful to drive, just impossible to start hot or cold-HELP!

Mmmm, most things appear to be checked.
When you mention "checked the timing sensor" I am going to assume the cam angle sensor, which is that whizzy thing where a distributor lived in a previous life. If that is "mis-timed", then loooooong cranking is required for the ECU to work which cylinder is which in the start sequence.
If, however, you are referring to CAS at the front of the timing cover, then "checking" is a mystery to me and others, as they are near impossible to "check", other than the connector plug, which does get crud inside and shorts the 2 terminals.
As you are at the "magic" 100k mile mark, I would be leaning towards the CAS, as 100k mile seems to be the point that they just go legs up, mine did at 178k kms.
No idea what the servicing could possibly have done to cause this, UNLESS the wiring at the TPS got damaged changing the oil filter?????.
OK, forgot again, damn, you are in the USA, sooooo a 4ltr??, NO??, so TPS orientation with the ECU may be all that is AWOL.
Someone else may throw some more at this as they surface for the day.

Grant,
Thanks for the heads-up on the cps, that is one I didn't check! The car is a 4,0L USA version. The tps was removed and checked, as I followed some of your posts for previous issues.
I am a mechanic who works on early (1905-1965) cars, but we own a wonderful XJ6 and an SLK Mercedes-Benz. These electron components are Greek to me....

Problems are fixed! Although the Crank sensor appeared good, I changed it anyway-still no improvement... Checked the cam position sensor, removed and cleaned it-no change. Ordered a new cam position sensor from Rock Auto (cheaper than any other source), installed it and now the car starts perfectly every time! Thanks for everyone's input!

Hi there-
Im new to the forum. My xj6 trac and brake lite came on I know its a dirty speed sensor, but mine is seized on both sides of the rear, and was wondering if anyone had a trick to removing them without breaking them because they are about $350 to replace.
I appreciate all feedback Thanks in advance guys!
