1996 XJR won't start, only drivers door unlocks
Hello from Georgia !
I need your help guyz - couple of month I had no time to enjoy my 96 XJR because of the renovation of the appt, crazy schedule at work, expecting second child ETC... So the Car was sitting in the street and of course battery went dead.
Today I've brought new Battery, 100 amph - put it in the car and everything electrical works - but the car won't start - as well as the doors - only drivers door opens - there's no alarm "beep" when opening door with the key.
What should i do? please help. Here in Georgia there's only couple of XJR'z - Meaning not Many people that i can ask regarding this problem.
I did push the Inertia Switch Button couple of times. No luck. Gearbox P is illuminated as well. That's were my diagnostics knowledge ends.

When you say it won't start - I assume you mean it won't crank? Here's a few basic things to check first.
- Do you get any clicking from the starter solenoid when you try to crank
- Is the new battery good? What voltage does it have?
- Check for voltage also at the +ve terminals on the bulkhead where the battery feed comes in to the engine bay and on to the fuse boxes
- Check for good earth on the engine (check voltage between engine block and +ve terminal on fusebox)
- Check the same voltage while trying to crank
Did you try any jump starts before you replaced the battery?
Let us know and we can go from there.

Thank you Very Much Brendan for the reply. Battery is good - I borrowed it from a Working BMW M3.
I do not hear any clicking from the starter solenoid when i try to cranck and yes i mean it does not cranck
My Guess is that something is wrong with the Alarm or Anti theft system or whatever it is, because i had the same issue before - battery died, i took it out to charge, put it back and straight away the alarm went Off - i had to put the Key into ignition to stop it.
What happens now is that neither the central lock system works from the drivers door (i do not have remote, i use the key) neither i hear the "beep" like i used to when opening the door.

Do you have a multimeter to carry out tests? Did you manage to check the voltages under the bonnet to check for earth and B+ ?
Your issue has some similarities to this thread.

Although not the same there is useful info in there on steps to confirm or otherwise the BPM.
Here is another thread with some good diagnostic steps for similar situation.

Brendan you will not believe - but i put the battery back in - original battery - which i took to charge to the mechanic - they deepcharged it - said it will work for a while cause it takes only 40% of the charging and will soon die, but - to the subject :
Car started !!!
I've disconnected the battery so it won't go flat again and hope that when i connect it back - it will start again.
