I have had southern electronics refurbish 3 radios out of my XJ12's with all the various gremlins described above. Flat rate $250.00 will fix all issues with a 12 month guarantee. Radio comes back like new.

Thanks for the tip, two quick questions:

1) Do you have the contact info for "Southern Electronics"?

2) How have the repairs held up, any examples of regular use over 1-2 years?

$250 seems high to a lot of folks I suspect, but once one factors in time and "experimentation" then it may be worth it if keeping the stock radio is a priority and the repair holds up. That is borderline for me, but I'd consider it versus tearing mine apart and hoping for the best.

Thanks again!

BTW, also just to keep this in another easy place for reference, here is a link to the online instructions addressing the CD changer "Not Cont" error caused by cold solder joints:

Apologies for the double post, but wanted to update both threads on my very positive experience with Southern Electronics.

So I sent mine off to Southern Electronics, and the charge to refurb the unit was $250.

They turned the radio around and it was back on my doorstep in less than a week which is amazing, and all shipping to and from is included, so you're really looking at a real cost closer to $200 depending on where you are shipping it from.

Unfortunately when I hooked it up there was at least one LCD segment out. But they were very quickly responsive, issued another free shipping label, and I sent it to them on Wednesday and it was back on Friday. Amazing.

They were great to work with, and although I can't say much about the long term durability of the work since I literally just got the radio back..... so far their excellent customer service and amazing turnaround says a lot. I don't expect any problems based on the quality of the radio's repair, labeling of the repair work on the radio and excellent packaging.

Thumbs up!

I just confirmed that the radio in my 1997 XJ6 which I thought was non-operational was able to be "revived" by repeatably pressing the tape eject button today. This is a trick I learned from this thread. Thanks all

I don't know how long this "fix" will last however. The LCD is still blank however.

Good news that you got it revived

Bad news is that it won't get better, it will get worse, so you'll eventually have to plan to live with it, have it reconditioned or replaced with aftermarket as most of the used ones will exhibit the same failure over time.

Default Southern Electronics repair, still fine after 2 years

Hopefully I won't jinx myself, but an update to this thread is that after a little over two years my repaired radio, via Southern Electronics, is still working fine.

BTW, another update.... radio still going fine.

The only caveat is that since the car hasn't been driven much in over a year, I did find the volume control again to be sensitive, sometimes jumping up/down grossly with little input, other times with almost no response even when turning it a lot. But it seemed to clear up once I worked the knob back and forth. So I think it was likely just some oxidization in the potentiometer from sitting so long without being used/turned.

Default Same problem with radio intermittently unresponsive

i have the exact same problem as you. The radio intermittently becomes completely unresponsive. This is regardless of whether it’s stuck on or off... driving me nuts! Did you ever find a solution to this?

There is some condition, often intermittent, in which none of the controls on this radio work, including the ON/OFF. Mine usually gets stuck in the on position, and I cannot change stations, volume, anything. But just now it got stuck off, which means no radio at all, bummer.

It is a problem internal to the radio. If you take it out and take the panel off and make sure all the buttons function and put it back together, you might get lucky. You can also just take the knob off and the on/off switch works a little better by just pushing on the shaft, but not convenient for volume.

I know that Austin Radio in Houston, TX works on these. They have repaired mine twice but never for less than $300. Contact them before mailing them anything. You can find them on the web. Good luck. I think I am going to have to buy a new car to get a working radio. Nothing else fits in this one for several reasons.
