With the key in the on position before start the fuel pump relay will click on then off in 3 seconds . Put your finger on it a king relay clicks close by . When the Crankshaft position sensor sees rotation it tells the ECU to click back on the relay for the duration of the drive .
Once the battery drops below 11.4 volts the ECU dies and will not give your spark or fuel . Watch your voltage gauge for sagging value .

You may want to confirm that you actually have a 1996 XJ-6, aka X300 before taking too much advise from us here in this section. It should have an I-6 (inline 6, rather than a V configuration) known as the AJ-16
