96 XJR cranking but not starting! Help
Car was driving fine until a two weeks ago. The car started running rough and I just brushed it off to the new tires I had installed. I thought maybe the balance was a little off. It wasnt horrible, but I could tell that it was just a little rough.
Last week the car just would not start. It cranks but just will not turn over.
I cant tell if its getting spark or not (the plug holders are a little different then what I am used to).
I tried to listen to see if I could hear the sounds of the fuel pump possibly turning on. I heard nothing. I dont even know if there is an external fuel pump. I would assume there would have to be and it looks like there may be one by the passenger door on the driver side but I haven't dropped it down yet.
Is there anything that I could be missing that I could check before I start tearing this thing apart? I have no desire to change an in tank fuel pump again (first one being from a Volvo) but I cant afford to bring it to a mechanic.
Any help will be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

I would certainly check the fuel rail pressure before replacing the fuel pump . . . located inside the tank.
CEL on? Codes?
Starter rotates the engine but no response?
What happened immediately prior to no start. Not a very short run period I hope (cylinder wash).
Might start with the 12 step 'car won't start plan' to be found here:

Work on that and let us know more information.

i am afraid that i do not have a way of reading codes. its a money issue. I wish I was back in the circumstances again that I could afford for the car to be worked on, but alas I have to do this myself again. I guess its good that I have a little tribal knowledge that I can work with.
car was running fine before it died. It was a little rougher then normal.
The car does nothing now.... just cranks and does not start at all.
let me try your opinion and I will get back to you of the outcome .
Thank you for your help and time
cheers

While cranking does the tachometer needle move...even just a little? No movement at all suggests a dead crank postion sensor.
The coil-on-plug design makes checking for sark a little awkward. For $5-$7 you can get a spark tester that'll fit inline between the plug and the coil. It blinks if you have spark. Most any auto parts store will have one.

Without a fuel pressure tester there's not a lot you can do as far as fuel goes.
If you have a 12v test light or multi-meter you can at least check to see if the fuel pumps (you have 2) are getting voltage to operate.
Are the injectors clicking when you crank the engine?
Hope this helps a little
Cheers
