Question ABS and Traction Control Failure

I have a 1996 Jaguar XJ6. The ABS and Traction Control lights come on after I start driving the car (after about 300 feet). I removed and cleaned each of the wheel sensors and the problem did not go away. With an ohm meter I checked each sensor and they are about the same (1.5K Ohms). Turning the car off and the restarting turns the ABS and Traction lights off, but once I start driving the lights come back on. Any advice will help. Thank you.

One more question. Trying to get a Jaguar ABS Code reader, but can not find one. Let me know if you know where I can purchase one. Thank you.

Try cleaning the connections at the T/C and ABS control unit in the engine bay. That's as far as my experience with the system goes....but it worked for me :-)

As far a code reader for the ABS (or any other sub-system) goes, I don't think you'll find one unless you get into true professional grade equipment and spend thousands. Even then I wonder if it might be proprietary info? Sometimes manufacturers hold that information ner and dear.

Others will chime in. I've never really researched it.

Cheers

My wifes car does the same it's not a Jag but it's the same problem. You need to take it to any garage and they will read the codes for you if you have fixed the problem yourself the codes will still have to be cleared or they keep pop up. I don;t realy care for ABS so I have not bothered with that car..

Good Luck

In addition to the pro grade scanners as Doug mentioned, AutoEnginuity, with Jaguar extensions will diagnose the motor circuit and the wheel sensors (and probably more, I just do not remember) for the X300.

You really need the code to see what you've got, but this one is a fairly common problem:

Default abs/trac lites

I was having the same problem and it was driving me crazy until I noticed that there was a blown abs fuse under the rear left seat, I believe it was fuse #7 but not sure (see fuse layout under hood on toolbox lid). It was the 30 amp fuse and someone replaced it with a 5 amp (which was blown)....no more abs or trac lite. Simple things first!

The ABS pump or circuit board on it can go bad. The sensors...which sounds like you have checked. Also, relays, fuses and all connections.

The circuit board is under the pump with the hard brake lines attached on the pass side firewall? If this is it, how does one get that out to inspect? I did clean the multi pin connector today as a follow up to cleaning the other connections and sensors. Still have the Trac Control and ABS lights on the dash at 300 or so feet as described.

You can either disconnect all the lines.... and meticulously re-bleed the brakes after you reinstall it.....or unbolt the pump/module assy and Pppuuuulllllllll, bending the lines as necessary (but carefully) as you roll the pump/module assy upward and inboard until you have room to disconnect it from the pump.

Either way, I would get a code-read first to make sure it is indicating a pump/module problem.

I had the same ABS light problem on my 99 XJ8 and tracked it down to a broken electrical conductor inside the wire insulation leading from the sensor in the wheel well. This was not easy to diagnose - in retrospect a harness continuity test would have saved me a lot of time. Spliced a new 2 inch length of wire and some heat shrink tubing and all is well.
