HAHAHA.
Some would say "be thankful for small mercies", at least it works, mmmm.
I reckon the head unit is starting to go hissy, coz it supplies the signal to the antenna, so that circuit is maybe getting a feed from somewhere. A replacement head unit makes sense to me.
Someone else may have different causes.

It's more than likely going to be the head as Grant suggests.
One thing worth checking and eliminating before going to the pain of pulling and possibly replacing the radio. Check the harness at the aerial motor isn't shorting.
