Aerial Only goes up and down 2 or 3 inches
Aerial mast will rise about 2 to 3 inches, stops and will go back down, so I decided to remove motor and see if the nylon cord was broken. TO my surprise, everything was in good condition, except that everything was covered in a thick black grease. After cleaning, everything seemed to moved much easier, prior to reassembly. I even removed the motor and cleaned it, very dirty and rusty inside. I was extremly careful when taking apart to note each position of the parts for reassembly. All was pretty straight forward, new grease very lightly, made sure not to overtighten the spool screw just in case it needs to rotate. Upon trying the radio after reinstalling, I got the same result. None of the gears show signs of wear or breakage, nylon chord was easy to push the aerial up and down. I did try with the aerial removed to see if motor would run, ran for about 25 or 30 seconds and then shut off. I am either missing something or is it possible I just need a new mast/chord. I did check the chord for wear and all the grooves did look about the same, it is almost as if something is stopping it from rising. Any suggestions would be great.

It seem to go both ways with little resistance, if I am quick enough with someone turning the radio on, I can add a little pull and it will full extend, and the opposite when I push down on it, will try again tonight, let me know if there is anything you suspect, thanks for input.

I agree with the sticking mast.
Mine did that, and the same "assist" got results.
I messed with Silicone spray and all sorts, and eventually bit the bullet and fitted a new mast (Stainless) and all sweet. The brand I got was Aerpro, maybe not in your market????, but some of the Chrome replacements I have seen in our group are all peeling and the owners reckon they are Europarts brand????.
