Default Alternator Bearing Bad

Any recommendations on a new alternator ?

When starting up Penelope the alternator squeals

Belt tension just right

pully on the front of the alternator warm and getting hot

The alternator is from a salvage yard and was putting out 13 or so volts on engine runs a couple months ago ( was able to punch the throttle to get the squeal away then )

Now the search for repairing the existing or get another one from a salvage yard as a cheaper then new and their reliability

I cracked a on another one the alternator aluminum casing halves so I don't want to go down that road again

I see the front bearing part list though

Bearings for Nippondenso Alternators (alternatorparts.com)

I see remanufactured but.......

Might as well buck up and get a new one with new everything inside

What was the best current brand that has low failures ?

I see Rock Auto is all remans and no new

You'd be better off if you took the alternator off the vehicle and had a local automotive electrical shop overhaul it. Quite often, the units purchased from a parts house have issues interfacing with the vehicle's electronics and may cause the charging system warning lamp on the instrument cluster to remain on.

Now that you mentioned it I do know a large alternator shop in town I've been to before and they can swap out the bearing knowing it was cranking out good voltage before

Thank you for bringing that up as I have seen the reliability issues

The one I have is an original Denso and I have a brush kit for installation now or later

I've tinkered with this ones brushes before so they are easy to get to

I can also get a good test bench spinup before installation

The local shop I use (https://www.facebook.com/highviewrebuilders136/) uses DENSO rebuild parts.
Always function normally when I get them back.

Whittled the alternator out of the car , old hat as was done before with the original alternator when that one time I hooked the battery up backwards and fried the voltage regulator

Off to the alternator shop

I was angry and frustrated at the time so now I have a arrow taped on the top of the battery pointing fwd

Honestly, the 199 dollar eBay reman I have has been fine. They did a great job on the rebuild I had a good look at it before I threw it on. Been on 10k miles now no problems at all.

Alternator was taken to a alternator shop to change the bearing only and it may prove on test bench to be bad in other aspects

Found a new and not rebuilt alternator unlimited lifetime warranty at local parts store for $ 239.99 - core charge so I can't beat that price but reliabilty is the question and the number of changing it back out

Thanks Xalty ,

but bad link

In the time frame I have to work with I can't ship it off somewhere and get the car running again within a time frame

Someone else may use the vendor link in their alternator options

If it was rebuilt by Denso ( or monitored by ) they would most likely have higher standards then just changing a single part to enable to just get it out of the door as cheap as they can

Verifying vendor Denso number against original Denso that came with car ( broke casting when trying to separate the 2 halfs as I fried that one but saved for parts )

Off the top of my head there was a different Jaguar part # for the supercharged engine for what ever reason

Mine is not supercharged

Combination Jaguar / Denso label

Jaguar # DBC - 6819 and is a match reference website below

Denso # 10 - 0211 - 63x0 ( label damaged )

The 2nd alternator extracted from a salvage car and presently away at a shop may be a different # and everything may match the vendor website as my VIN is 75xxxx

Part # reference source :

Genuine Alternator Assembly For Jaguar Xj 1995 - 1997 (from 720125 To 812255) Classic | Jaguar Land Rover Classic Parts

LNA1800BA for the supercharged reference the above website

The only difference in the cars operating requirements is the supercharger intercooler electric pump being on imediatly after start up

The alternator is 120 amp across all X300 models from my understanding

So we have a combination of deferent Jaguar part #s even within VIN #s
