At first the light only turned on sometimes like most other forum posts I've seen. Because no one in my country is able to read the ABS codes so I started with the most common issues. I started with the rear right sensor and took it out wiped it clean with a dry paper towel and put it back. After that the Anti Lock light stays on permanently even before turning on the engine. I cleaned up the rest of the sensors, repaired the front sensors grounding cable and reseated the ABS module connector. Even tried disconnecting the battery but nothing works. The ABS is not working and the light is still always on.

What's most confusing is why the car isn't doing the self test at 10mph? Next on the list is resoldering the abs module but even if I fix it would the light go away without erasing the codes with a scanner?

 

There’s no reason to believe that the ABS self test isn’t occurring. It’s just whatever is causing the light to go on isn’t clearing.

Without pulling the code, you can’t possibly know what the ABS is seeing.

what country are you in? You’re going to have to find a way to pull that code.

 

I'm in Macedonia and no one has the old Ford/Jaguar/Mazda diagnostics. All the dealerships are recently opened and they only have the newer 2002 and up diagnostics.

I'm gonna look around in Serbia or Greece.

Not to steer you in the wrong direction, but this thread claims the Foxwell, with no model number referenced will NOT read it. Perhaps thats the NT510, which seems easier to find.

If the ABS light goes on before the speed check, it sounds like a connection problem to me.
Have you checked all the fuses, and measured continuity in the various plugs? could be a corroded or damaged wire somewhere.

What year is your car?
It seems a lot of people have successfully read the codes on their x300 using a standard cheap OBDII reader and a diagnostic app - i couldn't get it to work 100% on my 95, but that might just be the apps fault (OBD fusion)

 

Regular "P" codes can indeed be read by any standard OBD2 reader. Jaguar unique ABS, and Transmission codes cannot.

The ABS light will stay lit if there's a problem detected, even after the car is shut down and restarted. Once it reached (I believe) 15MPH, it performs a self check. If whatever caused the light to go on before is now showing up as good, the light shuts off, if not, it stays on. There's no way to tell if it is or isn't being performed....unless you know you've solved a problem, and the ABS system won't clear the code.

 

At least with my car the light would go away every time it was shut down, and only reappear after the speed check - that turned out to be a faulty solder in the module.
If the light is on immediately upon startup, i would suspect it would be fault the ECU notices before the speed check, which is why i would advice to check all the wiring, fuses and plugs for shorts.

 

Mine too. The problem got worse or the light stayed on after the first sensor I cleaned or the rear right sensor and I just used a degreaser and a paper towel. The sensor and wiring seemed fine. The fuse in the cabin that's under the rear seats was fine.

I have ordered some Chinese VCM to try and read the code but I don't know if it will work.

 

did you check the big multiplug on the module too?

you can check the continuity of all the sensors there, and also set the multimeter to volts and see if it changes when you spin the tires.
i would also inspect an clean all the ground points, just to be sure it gets power.

Speedo is working, ABS isn't. I just reseated both the big multiplug and the small power cable. Is there a wiring diagram for checking the continuity?

 

While reading the codes is the key to identifying and solving this problem, your original problem statement raises some suspicion. Good intentions sometimes go awry: You had an intermittent light...then you cleaned the RR sensor, and Presto! You had a permanent light. I would suspect two problems - one somehow connected to the RR sensor, and then another contributing to the intermittent light - which smells a lot like the ABS Module solder issue, though it could be others. That one, in my experience across 3 cars, is where the light is never on at startup, but illuminates in front of my neighbor's house, reliably. Whether due to distance from parking spot to the road in front of my neighbor's house, or if that is where I first exceed 10 or 15 mph, I couldn't say. But C1095 is the only thing that ever popped as responsible for that behavior, and several attempts at soldering the motor pins on the board eventually overcomes it.

 

In my two 1996 XJS, both developed a problem at the passengers front side ABS sensor. Cleaning it would make the light go away....occasionally. Eventually, I just replaced the darn thing (not cheap) and the light has never come back.

I'm not sure if the front passengers sensor could be the problem for you, but based on the lack of availability on eBay, I would suspect it is the first one to go for some reason. I often came across the front drivers side, but never the passengers....probably best to just buy a new one anyways.

 

I do have the XJS, and not the X300, but I believe the ABS module, Teves IV is the same.

My light stayed on when I restarted the car, then as the car got up to speed, it would shut off.

As for the chinese VCM, it will probably work a few times, but don't use it often, it likely won't last long. I would love it if someone who bought some of these other OBD2 readers would report success or failure. At $200, shipped, the Foxwell and Vident would be excellent investments....if we could know they worked.

 

The VCM I ordered would only be used for this. I also ordered an ELM327 V1.5 for monitoring stuff with my phone.

 

I would endorse the earlier comments about the significance of the light coming on before you start moving. Unlike many other errors, this one resets every time you switch off, perhaps to maximise the opportunity of the car having functioning ABS, as once the light is on, ABS is off.
The strong likelihood is a wiring / connector fault, and as you exacerbated it by removing the right rear sensor, I know where I would look..... The sensors are fairly simple, and it is easy to test the continuity of the wiring from the plug to the sensor, A definite first step in my book.

I have the Foxwell NT630 Pro (about $120) which I decided to try out two years ago for its ability to read the ABS and Airbag systems. I could not get it to communicate with either system in the car (1995 X305). In the other linked thread, user @Scheff928 used a NT520 Pro which apparently worked for the ABS system, although he also referenced using it for his 2000 S-Type. The 520 is a more capable unit, but I don't see how the ABS/Airbag software in a similar unit such as my 630 would be any different than in the 520. Same manufacturer.

I wouldn't risk the cash outlay to "try it" at least not for an online purchase. In my case I needed a new scanner and was hoping this would be the one. It did not impress me at all.

I think I will have another shot at accessing those systems because I haven't tried it in 2 years and details are vague. I will update if anything changes!

 

I have a icarsoft unit that I bought for my X350 but thought I would just try it on my XJR6, and it DOES talk to the ABS and TCM units, with the ignition off and seat/mirror memory modules when ignition is set to 1.
Oddly, it would not read ANY ODB2 data, but my cheap Bluetooth unit does, go figure lol
