Default anyone installed rear parcel shelf speakers in X300?

hi all,
I've posted in various parts of the thread regarding the recent upgrade of the stereo in my X300 which I've had for a month
I removed the old tape/radio unit and CD changer (which had a bad connection and didn't work 75% of the time) and had a Parrot Asteroid handsfree head unit installed. The door speakers x4 were all literally rotten and have been replaced with 5 1/4" JVCs with a good sound, plus a Sony amp and subwoofer in the boot.
The amp can easily run a couple more speakers, and while the subwoofer is doing what it is designed to do, I feel there is something of a mid-bass 'hole' in the sound.

My specific question is this: has anyone succesfully installed 6 1/2'' or 6x9" speakers in their X300 parcel shelf?
I have the Daimler version with a blind in the rear windscreen, which I want to preserve - one option is to buy a secondhand parcel shelf without the blind and cut holes in that.
However, peeking in through from the boot, the problems I perceive are:-
1. clearance issues with the petrol tank, which is very close to the metal part of the parcel shelf,
2. there is only one large hole in the metal - to the left. On the right is a solid recessed area in the metal shelf with a wiring loom coming from it.

So if I am to do this, I would need some sort of spacer/build-up to house the speakers. All the aftermarket spacers on the world-wide-web look pretty naff.

Where to from here? Have any of you been down this path?
All advice appreciated

A coulpe years ago I put a shallow sub (running free air) in that hole. I used a dremel to widen the hole to the size i needed to fit the sub. it fits with a little room to spare inbetween the bottom of the sub and the gas tank. The shelf (plastic part below rear windshield) still fits on and hides the sub. I just had to put some foam under it to rise it about a half inch (this also keeps it from rattling). Im very certain you could put a 6x9 in that hole without, or little modification to the hole itself as long as it is a shallow mount speaker. I think the sub I put in had a depth of 3- 1/8ths inch. hope this helps!
