Anyone tried fitting 1988 - 1989 twin 5 3/4 headlight to X300?
Just curious if anyone has ever tried fitting the early XJ40 headlight assemblies from the 1988 - 1989 cars to a X300? The reason I ask is today I drove an hour from Youngstown Ohio area to just west of Akron Ohio to go to a wrecking yard to get a RH headlight assembly for my 1997 X300 car. When I got there I discovered that the yard sales people had not been entirely truthful about the condition of the headlight assembly they had. The glass lenses were separated from the rear plastic, the one outer dim light I really needed had a reflector that was totally shot and the rear plastic bracket that bolts to the body had some ears broken off so the whole thing was pretty much worthless and I wasted a few hours driving there and back again.
I just looked on Ebay for other ones and I noticed a RH headlight assembly from a 1988 - 1989 XJ40 car and got to wondering if this would have any chance at all of bolting up to the X300 car at all to allow normal H5001 & H5005 5 3/4 bulbs to be used in a X300.

I think 95Leaper, if not, some other member...was recently posting a complete set of x300 headlights available.
Edit: "What Don said below.." (Sorry Roger - I get cranky and out-of-sorts renewing water rail gaskets and didn't take the time to look up the prior postings)

I know this doesn't answer your question directly, but X300 lenses/lamps and entire assemblies are on eBay all the time, often for pretty cheap. There is RH assembly on eBay now for $50:

Regarding fitting the XJ40 round lamps, the shape of the bezel is completely different where it mates to the hood than the X300. The XJ40 is a straight line, where the X300 has the lamps scalloped into the hood. So the XJ40 bezel won't fit on an X300 hood without some kind of customization.
Without using the XJ40 bezel/mounts you'd have to do some custom modification to the X300 lamp mounts as the XJ40 lamps are the old style sealed beams with ring mounts and X300 lamps mount on pivot pins. Plus you would have to build some sort of wiring harness conversion as the connectors are different.
If you wanted to try to mount the complete XJ40 lamp brackets, they look to be similar dimensions, but the mounting locations are much different and again not sure how they lenses would interface with the X300 hood scallops.
And in the end you'll end up with inferior lamps with the sealed beams. So I'm personally not sure it would be worth the effort to figure out if one is just looking to repair the X300 headlights.
If you are looking for alternatives to the X300 lamps, I'd recommend considering moving to X308 lamps which are "bolt in"(replace whole bracket) or "snap in"(snap in X308 lamps to X300 brackets) with some minor wiring modifications required that provide for reportedly slightly better lighting and bulbs.
