Tappets, crap inside the engine, tensioner loose/guide destruction or imminent chain failure worn head components.
Although if its just when starting the car it could just be the worn starter that everyone seems to get sounds like a grinding because the starter is still engaged after the engine is started.
if its that your describing I wouldn't worry.

If I do manage to record it, I'll post it here.

Rattle versus knock, mmmmmm.
Mine had that, and for some weird reason I checked the tension of the large bolt at the front of the engine, 33mm, and it was not as tight as it should be, 3ft pipe on the breaker bar, engine jammed at the flywheel, and it went up 1 flat, noise went with it.
This is common on the V12, so maybe that is why I went looking in that area.

Just started her now, and finally caught that sound.
...I was rather beginning to think (hope) that it had gone for good.
Hope you can hear it over the goddamn cicadas.

I had a sound a bit like this when I bout my x300 a few moths back the garage diagnosed it as the air con compressor was goosed. Currently I have the air con belt off to get rid of the noise till i get the ACC refurbed.
Take your belt off see if it stops. I cant listen to your youtube file as in the office
Hope that helps

It does have a faint squeaky sound all the time. Sounds to me like one of the belt driven accessories.
(My brother took a couple of beautiful shots of the car, hope to get them up this week.)
Grant Francis, thanks for the tip, I'll look into it.

OK.
Reading what you just said, my thoughts are now:
1) A/c idler pully bearing, it is a plastic pulley with imbedded bearing. Replaced mine with a steel pulley and replaceable bearing.
2) The belts themselves, being "flat section" belts they do get noisy quicker than traditional "V" belts, and squeak/squeal more also.
I would remove both belts, start the engine, see what gives. DO NOT run it for long like this as NO water pump, but for testing purposes, no issues.

Hello everyone,
I am sorry for my english but I am french.
So, I have exactly the same sound from my x300 4.0l (aj16) year 1997.
These recent works have been done (less than 3 months) to ban this noise :
new AC compressor
new belts (alternator/water pump and AC compressor)
new A/C pulley
new water pump
new starter
new upper timing chain tensioner
It' a lot of money and the sound is always there. not on hot start (under 15 minutes and not and cold start (more than 6 hours).
Somebody have an idea,
I have a video on youtube : JAguar x300 - YouTube
Thanks for your help.
Best regards,

Thanks for the recording, but that doesn't seem to be the sound I'm talking about. It sounds like a pulley, kind of hard to describe but it only lasts a few seconds. It's more of a loud squeaky sound, not like belt squeal. It's really intermittent so it may be hard to capture in a recording.
It does have a faint squeaky sound all the time. Sounds to me like one of the belt driven accessories.

Crank pully (damper) delaminating? Hard to spot til it starts shedding or shredding belts..but you are beginning to describe the sound it makes long before (6 mo or so) you ever see anything...

Now got this loud high pitch squeak myself, very interment normally last about a few hundred yards then it goes…..
Done most of this work myself, since getting the car still got the high pitch squeak…..
Could someone upload an engine shot with them pointing to the Crank pully (damper) so I can investigate please

ok, i'll give my thought here...i thought my squeal was the idler pulley on the ac side, changed , but nope wasnt it, changed both belts, thinking that that were glazed, or burnish, not gripping, even sprayed some belt dressing, no difference. Sooooooo one morning here in arizona, the great southwest desert as some call it, , windows, down turn key on, didnt even engage starter, turns out the cooling fans for radiator, made the nosie, they came on, its the upper right one, i assume the shaft bearing is wearing or lost its lub, but noise goes away once it warms up, now that is fall here in arizona, definitely does it every morning. Getting ready to change lower radiator hose, so will take fans out then, see if can lube it. Anyway that my nosie

I have a question.
The noise stops when I put the car in gear, any gear, and when i put it back in park it does not return.
I tried starting it in Neutral with the parking break on, I got the same result, the noise is there and when i move it to park the noise stops.
The starter not disengaging makes sense to me, I am wondering if anyone has experience with this?
