Wow! Thank you for this information. I wonder if Jaguar dealer would help with this or if it was ever done already. I"ll show it to my independent jaguar service guy and see if he is willing to check this out. Honestly, it doesn't really bother me and until my daughter said something I never really noticed that much. I appreciate your reply..

I usually get a smell before I kick the AC on when the car has been sitting in the sun for a while. It clears up very fast after the blower comes on.
I've seen videos of people injecting cleaner through the condenser drains. When I was under the car a couple of weeks ago I took a quick look to see if I could locate them but I didn't see them. Is there more than one? Based on where I see the water dripping I'd say they are nearer to the right side.

To answer the original Q, no there is no cabin air filter in USA cars. Apparently German cars originally had one. I wish they all did.
The musty smell is made worse because the heater valve opens when the car is shut off (it needs power to stay closed). So heat from the hot coolant can migrate into the heater core after shut off. Then there is moisture from the A/C condenser in there which is not a good combination.
So the cabin air filter would not really solve this "problem," there needs to be a closed valve on the heater core pipes when the engine is off. But it was not designed this way.
@PBoudr The condensate drain tubes should be found on both sides of the transmission under the vehicle, and the connections at the evap core should be seen up in the corners of the footwells. I believe they can be carefully pulled off to make sure they are clear.
Seems like a good idea to treat the core from below, that should help.

Hi and thank you for your answer. So, the 97 xj6L is a USA car. I thought this year/model was foreign. Someone/something must have given me that idea. But it's good to know for sure. I'm glad there is no filter. I can ask my Jag guy about checking the drain tubes to be sure they are clear. I love learning about my car so thank you again to all.

Well Jagicon, your car was made for the USA, with emissions, bumper specs, and the steering wheel on the right/left/wrong side. But ALL these cars were built in Coventry, England. So that is "foreign" to us.
Check the car's birth mark stamped into the metal between the spare tire and the battery. It is not a USA VIN!
Though I consider the Brits as family, given my heritage and Jaguar experience, of course. Not to mention our countrys' historical affiliations.
