Default Car Jumps when shifting into reverse

Hello everyone, good evening.
Its a standard car, when I shift straight to drive no problems but when I shift to park its a violent shake. I also have a transmission light on and two codes
p0122 Throttle Position Sensor/Switch 'A' Circuit Low Input
P0177 Fuel Composition Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

Chris,

Being a '94 is it a late XJ40, or the first of the X300.

It id odd for a bang as described when going "into" park, it is usually the other way around.

Before throwing things, and $$, at it, disconnect the battery, leave it sit whilst you have a drink, or 2.

Reconnect the battery.

This should clear any issues/codes/lights/etc, temporarily, and things may perform fine. However, if the fault/bug/whatever, that caused the code, and light, are still present then it will return very quickly.

Had the battery completely drain at one point then it charged it and have had it on and off the car a few times since. But unfortunately it still has these problems

Grant, there is a common theme emerging in your 'advice' posts - the frequent use of alcohol to smooth the thought processes...!

I am fortunate not to have had any 'codes' yet - when things go wrong, as they will, where do these codes appear?

Chris, BUGGA, I will keep thinking. It is an X300 then??.

AL, you guessed it, a nice SMOOTH Scotch, and quietly contemplate Jaguar issues whilst sitting in the MK10, what a simple car that is, not an ECU in sight. All this technology really is good for the drinking, trust me.

I have NEVER had a code in our X300, S type, or the XJ40, so I have NO idea where they display, but I am going to guess in the speedo odometer area???.

Believe it or not I actually got it off my code reader. But now I cant pull anything anymore. But the reader connects 1 out of 10 times and I can pull it.
Why do I have such a weird car that no one thinks exists??? lol

As much as I like to have a nice drink once in a while I wouldnt want to mess with the battery when Im a little sloshed.
Chreers guys!

It could be a simple thing like the battery is past it's best and needs replacing.

These car really do need a good battery for all the electronics

I agree with mike, I had a no start issue and replaced the fuel pump and relays to no avail. When I put a brand new bATTERY in...boom the car started right up!

Replaced the battery and now it starts great! But still jumps when shifting to and from reverse!

This could be down to a sticking throttle cable holding the revs a bit too high.

OK, sweet result to a point.

The throttle cable suggestion is valid, as is the ICV (Idle control Valve), or stepper motor as some call it.

The dreaded "black goo" inside the throttle body can cause the disc to stick in a non fully closed position.

All of this points to an idle that is too high for smooth gear activation, particularly "P" to "R".

Failing all that, I am heading for weak engine and transmission rubber mounts. They are OLD by now, and that will certainly give that scenario.

From now on, I will open a beer as step one of any job on my cars. Did you try this yet Chris? I'm sorry, but I don't know what else to suggest here!

Grant, you may need to double up if you ever see yellow near the speedometer... but, seems you are charmed, so enjoy.

FYI codes appear on your scan tool! You guys have one of those, right?

Richard, maaaaate,

Scan tool HAHA, no bloody way, that would awaken demons I wont nothing to do with.

I did use a mates scan tool on the X300 when I first got it, as curiosity was interrupting that drinking time, NOTHING.

He did his X308 also, NOTHING.

I did the S Type when we got it a year ago, BBQ at his place and Merlot flowed freely, and still NOTHING.

So my deduction is that this OBD???? is just to fool us into spending money on a tool that tells me the car is just fine, duh, I already know that, it starts just fine, goes forward in "D", and backwards in "R", and returns awesome fuel economy.

OK, the X300 died in the driveway, took the XJ-S for dinner, coz I can, and it did not require a fancy mega $$ tool to tell me the CAS had gone legs up.

I am from very OLD school, and diagnosis using the "grey matter" I was born with, and good old common sense, which needs NO batteries, or plugs and cords, has always worked so well.

Undoubtedly I will get caught out one day, that's what the JD is for. haha, and the "mighty" MK10 is ready to rock and roll if I get desperate.

The Chilli Crabs are ready, see ya, wife's cooking YUM.

transmission light on

When shifting to drive no problems

when shifting to reverse sound and jump

transmission seems to be leaking too
along with other hoses too
Ive heard that transmission shouldnt be worked on your self and is around $4000+
How big is the job and how long does it take?
What does it intal? what needs to be removed, detached and taken apart?
