Cheap ignition coils from Ebay sellers?
Has anyone here had any experience with the ignition coils that several Ebay sellers offer for under $20 each. I see several sellers offering coils in $18 - $19 price range. The cheapest coils I see on rockauto.com are around $57 - $58 each. These $58 coils from Rockauto are Beck-Arnley parts but say they are equivalent to a LHE1510AB part. Rockauto also lists AirTex/Wells coils for $270 each and Standard Motors Products coils for $410 each.

Have you checked the power source for all coils at the Papa Indy 1 connector pin 4 White / Pink wire as it has a history of corroding like mine ? You can make a jumper wire to get around it as a cheap try . The coils grounds are provided by the ECU which is 2 wire grounded on the engine rear bulkhead and the case ground is the ECU case lower rear mounting bolt .

Some , but not enough quality on most . The coils degrade over time and one may be at 75 % and another at 85 % and be good enough regardless of the % input power . O'reily Auto Parts has a bench coil tester and all of my original made in Japan ( 110 k miles ) passed . Not all O'riley's has the machine and you have to operate it yourself as they're not trained so call first if they have one . Innova 4400 adapter number is # 32 or close . The power switch is on the back .

Further to the recent departure of my X300, I have a full set (6) of original coils from my donor car. I think two of them are slightly suspect (long story) but at least four of them are fine and they're up for grabs to anyone who's happy to pay the postage from Ireland. I also have lots of bits and pieces available before my donor car goes to the crusher, so let me know if I can help.
First come first served.

Apparently the "OE" coils from SNG Barratt - part number LHE1510AB# note the hash/pound sign are the closest to the original Made in Japan one used by Jaguar (Lucas are rumoured to have reboxed them and the current Lucas ones are inferior parts). These are not eBay cheap, but way less expensive than "Jaguar" ones.

Difference between cheapo ebay and original coils is that the cheapo ones will fail quickly(when they do) and often in a spectacular way(eg causing engine stalls and christmas tree lights on the dash, right when you're trying to overtake a lorry at 70mph) and the original coils will simply give weaker and weaker spark so you wont notice quickly that they are failing. A lot of original coils are also now cracked and will burn out the cam cover if cracks are not filled in and of course will also cause a slight misfire every now and then.
Japanese coils will last better too due to better QC but it doesn't mean that all cheap coils will fail quickly.
I'm using a mixture of cheapo and Lucas coils, tried quite few different coils over the last few years. There are coils with a cream glue and coils with a black glue, with a plastic tab in the middle or without it. Generally I think the ones with the black glue are better(better idle). Original ones should be ok, as far as they are not cracked and not give a weak spark, if they are, melt the plastic in the cracks with a soldering iron and they should be ok to use.
Also, always use a dielectric grease on the coils, it will save the cam cover and improve idle.

If you have older original coils, or cheapie new coils, carry a couple spares in the trunk.
The one saving grace to the AJ16 coil problem is that they're easy to replace by the roadside, if needed, in literally just a few minutes. Like, 5 minutes with a bit of practice
If a coil starts misbehaving you might not be able to determine which one it is so swap out two at a time. If no joy, repeat, and repeat again. I became rather adept at this as I worked my way through a slew of defective cheapie coils.
If you determine a coil is faulty throw it in the trash right away! You don't it to inadvertently get mixed in with your supply of "known good" or "possible good" spares. Ask me how I know

As many of you know and mention (which we appreciate!) our Japanese coils are from the 'original' manufacturer. They are made by Diamond Electronics in Japan and are exactly what was supplied to the Jaguar back when the cars were built. We have found these to be far superior to any other coil on the market. So much so that we offer a free 3 year guarantee on them!
To date i am yet to refund or replace ANY coils made by Diamond as a result of failure.

I've checked several of the O'Reilly stores in my area, and unfortunately so far no luck finding one with the tester.

Some months back I got some coils packs from FCP euro usually I buy theirs I think it's euro pro at about $90 which is what my repair station sports car center in Eugene Oregon used but in my infinite wisdom and because FCP euro his lifetime warranty on all their products this is attractive I bought two cheap ones $35 apiece and subsequently put one on it went bad so I put the second one on after about three months and then my problem Linda away so I clean the injectors checked all kinds of other things put in a new battery because the battery was old anyway and it is rated to be replaced finally it still was in limp mode and missed so I took it to my repair station and I needed another coil lesson learned don't buy anything from China I didn't realize these are from China until after I took delivery or were down
