courtesy lights intermittent

I'm having an issue with the courtesy lights in the 97 XJ6. When the car is running they come on when any of the doors open. When the car is off they do not come on when the doors open or they flicker for a second and go out. The door puddle lights do come on whether or not the car is running so they appear to be working properly.
Wondering how the courtesy lights can work in one mode (running) and not the other (off).
Any ideas?

Mine did similar.
There is a TINY micro switch inside the actual lock mechanicm in each door. They get hissy, and wierd stuff happens, usually the "strobe light effect".
Mine was the LHF (passengers) door.
Doug, on here, did an excellant write up on fixing that a while back. A quicky search should find it, OR, he will slide by and link it. I am not that IT clever.
