Default Cylinder head swap ?

Can the Cylinder head from a AJ6 4.0 ( black cam cover), Be replaced by a cylinder head from a 4.0 AJ16 engine. It seems to be that the exhaust is different but anything else?

Cam cover won't fit. If it would, many of us would be running the aluminum AJ-6 cam covers on our AJ16's these days....though I suppose you could maybe find a magnesium alloy AJ16 cam cover to go along with the head that isn't yet eaten up by corrosion....and just leave the coil cover off as you'd need that space for plug wires. I have no idea about the important part - the head-to-block interface, other than to remark that the AJ16 has a history of developing an oil leak at the head gasket - whether or not that was also visited on the AJ6 is beyond my knowledge.

Thank you for your prompt reply, I have at my disposal two AJ16 cylinder heads with cam covers. One with N/A cams and one with S/C cams. Two good un cracked AJ16 exhaust manifolds. Haven't gone up to St, Louis to get them yet. I have a friend who has manufactured a Turbo system for the AJ16 engine. I think the way to find out is to connect to a Jaguar supply house and see if the head gasket is the same part# between a AJ6 engine and the AJ16 engine. Plus would have to do a leak down test on AJ6 engine to see if worthy or not Will let you know/

After checking with my parts supplier. The head gasket # is the same on the AJ6 black cam cover 4.0 and the AJ16 silver cover 4.0.Appears I can move forward as to a leakage test on the AJ6 engine first.

Thank you for your interest

If we are talking about the complete head; valves are different size [edit it might be just the valve stems that are different size, AJ6 being bigger] and there seems to be difference in cam lift

Cams
Jag lovers forum thread
XJ40 forum thread - mentions cam caps being taller in AJ16 --> longer headbolts

Go to Page 14....new pistons are used in the AJ16 engine. There's also additional information that may cause you to reconsider.

Thank you Vee for that information, If I proceed on the turbo project, I would need less compression.

Thank you.
