I’d officially cross powder coating off the list. Not only is it flaking off on the inside, now that I’ve cleaned off the camcover, you can clearly see degradation making it no better than paint.
POR15 might be the best solution for these camcovers after all?
I wonder if that would survive on the inside of these cam covers?

it is not a daily driver (only drive it a couple times a week atm)
so it might take a while to get an idea,
but i do suspect it will last.
unlike paint POR-15 is more like an epoxy.
it forms a hard unbreakable shell like an epoxy glue.
i left a little patch the size of a coin to dry on a piece of timber. once i chiseled it off it felt hard and solid as.
i can't see how it would chip/crack/flake very easily if at all.
i really liken the finish to that of a 2 part epoxy resin.

time will tell how much of this is marketing BS and how much well it actually holds up.
they say it discolours from UV, but i suspect it also discolours from heat as the silver i used on the cam cover did start to yellow, so i gave it a coat of hi temp silver on the top.

well not quite……
the used the DB7 which was based from the AJ6…
so whilst not exactly the same . They are the same block.
just checked an image and this is not the cam cover the DB7 was different.
do wanna know which one this is tho.

this isn't quite what your asking however.
Late XJ40 Covers ( which have the oil Cap ) have the same bolt pattern and fit directly do an AJ16 Head. I'm looking into a Coil on Plug option that will work with this Rocker cover.
I'm doing it for Aesthetic reasons as i personally very much enjoy the motorsport look of a ribbed rocker cover . Part of this plan is also an XK style oil cap

Bit of background on my thoughts
1,My Magnesium Cover is in good shape - but it is showing the signs so i would like to keep and preserve it
2, Prefer the XJ40 Rocker Cover cover with the ribs
3, My Lucas coils are working but the idle isn't as smooth as it could be.
The Idea was Covered by another member who us using Ford coil on plugs

Later in the thread Ford Barra Coils were mentioned, so the idea is to purchase one and confirm it operates and fits
( XJ40 valve covers have smaller holes that do not Accept XJ16 Coil packs ) and then design a simple hold down bracket / o ring seal arrangement.
My Car is a garaged weekend fun special car that gets treated well so im not too worried about exposed coils.

i was looking at iacv and the one from a gas barra caught my eye as looking same too.
if i could afford to splurge on parts could be an interesting test.
i have a territory here with a barra so could test a few parts i suppose.
always thought if the aj16 dies maybe do a barra swap to keep the car very similar but make it cheaper and easier to work on
would explain why this company that does falcon performance stuff would also have jag coils.
the coils are the same just packed into a different housing

a parts store Barra coil is $20 so it can be DOA and still serve it’s purpose.
ive also found some AEM pencil style coils which are much prettier but much more expensive.
if it comes to it I will modify the xj40 valve cover - but that’s not a solution which will help other peoples magnesium corrosion issues

yeah i know its cheap enough. Could test fit with my terry coils tho. If i could be bothered. Would be the matter of mounting them if they worked.

I have ordered an early type 2 pin Coyote V8 ignition coil to see what can be done with fitting it into the XJ40 Cam cover.
I searched for many hours to find dimensions and actual physical specifications to no results. In the end ive taken a punt. its a nice looking coil with a fixing bolt and a concentric head on it.
Its a punt but i will see what happens. From here it should be possible to lengthen or shorten the stalk like is possible on a lot of other COP units.

So for project put an xj40 rocker cover on an x300
this is a lot of waffle about coils, x300 ones don’t fit so this is all for the purpose of running the xj40 alloy cam cover .
I have received the coyote/mustang coil and it sits in the xj40 plug tube where the x300 coil is too large of a diameter . I trimmed the lower boot slightly untill it sat correctly and I’m quite happy with it .
I’ve set about designing a coil mounting bracket . Some drilling is necessary but it’s nothing that can’t be sorted with a drill press.
For wiring it I’ve found that The x300 female
coil plug Is a sumitomo DL90-2 this is not mentioned in the wiring diagram which states connectors are econoseal 3 070 type . I’m probably just going to pin the ford coil plug on the x300 loom for now . But an Adapter harness could be made .
im going to need to drill and tap a coil mount in my magnesium coil so I can do some testing and make sure this system runs correctly before buying more coils to fully commit to the xj40 cam cover

The coil plate in the picture is just sheet metal galv for testing.
I’ve gone far enough to get my dxf file cut from 2mm stainless steel .
in the picture the coil is seated on a spark plug in a cylinder head . The coil is aligned to land the fixing bolt In the groove , this will get a stud with loctite to seal it .
