Digital mileometer display - two figures dimmed

Recently I've noticed that the two left digits of my digital mileometer display are not as bright and clear as the ones to the right. Is this display illuminated by a bulb or bulbs, if so I can't see why it's partly dimmed and not just failed as would happen if it was a bulb or is the whole display digital meaning that two digits are failing?
Thanks.
Thanks.

It's not hard to do, 4 screws from underneath and then it comes out. Have the steering wheel as low as it will go, and as far out as it goes. Actually seeing the screws can be the hard part, they are deeply recessed. Lie in the footwell and look up and you'll see them, on the front edge of the cluster. A flashlight helps too.

Biffta, did you give the cluster a good couple of whacks with your knuckles? Sometimes a little coercion will "repair" a loose bulb connection. Possibly save you a removal job.
I thought the bulbs were the common clear push-in type. But i could be wrong. Foggy memory from last time I saw the cluster out of the car.

Also, found this link to removal and unless I'm mistaken, the removal process seems to be different! Bit confused now.

Bifta,
The removal process shown on the link is correct. You have to remove the trim panel in the drivers footwell, then there are four screws, then as the binnacle is coming out, you need to unplug the two electrical connectors. Having had the pleasure more than once, it is definitely not a big job.
The link then goes on to explain how to open the instrument pack, which may be where the confusion arises, but that too is not a complicated task, and is fairly obvious when you have the pack in front of you.
Contrary to what was said earlier, from memory the instrument pack bulbs are clear rather than blue/ green, but again, this will be obvious when you have it apart.

And yes, once the instrument cluster is removed it has to be taken apart, but again that's just a few screws.
