Be carefull with that starter spray, you run the risk of melting the pistons!

Other than the above I can't help, sorry.

tudski, what I want you to try is wen you are starting the car cold, rotate the key to the RUN position (but not to the START position yet) and then pause there for 5 seconds or so. Now, rotate the key to the START position to attempt to start the engine. Does the engine start now? If yes, then you are most likely looking at a bad fuel pump. If the motor still doesn't want to start, give the gas pedal a quick move before attempting to start the car. It may be that you have some buildup there and it is just enough to keep the engine from running. The only other thing that I cold possibly think of is your crankshaft position sensor is starting to go and due to how it is failing, the ECU can not see the position of the crankshaft and therefore doesn't know where to put the first sparks. By adding the starter fluid, it will auto combust, giving the engine enough speed that it can make a useable signal from the crankshaft sensor.

Tudski, you can check the functionality of the crankshaft sensor. What you will need to do is to remove the sensor off of the side of the engine and then using a multimeter, set it to the 2 VDC scale and connect the leads to the 2 pins on the sensor. Now, holding the sensor still, pass a large metal object close to the end of the sensor. You should see the multimeter jump up. The amount is relative to how close you are to the sensor (closer is better, but not too close, hate to see you damage the sensor), the speed at which the steel passes by (faster gives a better jump, but also makes it harder to get it close), and then a larger piece of steel will give a bigger jump (more steel, more weight, harder to control). I tend to use a good size screw driver. That is fairly common, has the necessary amount of metal in it, and can be controlled pretty easy.

tudski, you will need to jack up the passenger side of the car. Look behind the passenger side wheel to find the crankshaft pulley. Then look on the firewall side of the engine there. You should see an electrical connector there with a 2 wire plug attached to it. That is your crankshaft speed sensor.
