El Gato Grande - The International Car Of Adventure

I have never had any luck finding a rebuild kit for my XJS clutch master cylinder. I ended up buying one from JustJags in the UK for 62 quid. Perhaps you can make that work in the X300 with a bit of jury rigging? They look pretty similar.

I plan on taking my old unit apart and seeing if I can find the correct seals to fit. Will post here and on the XJS forum when I find out.

Cheers guys! That's encouraging! I'm in the situation right now that I could take the box and all the other bits out for rebuilding and take them apart. Not all of them at once of course, I need to have some life as well in meantime (and there's not that much time for it either, working nights full time and and doing 3 days at college) but I'm determined to do it, and it would be a great practice as well, quite related to the subject. I'd prefer to rebuild those bits and pieces rather than just swap them, I want to know this car inside out!

Hello FireCrow,
I want to replace the original but malfunctioning radio-casette deck in my '96 X300 XJR by a more modern aftermarket model. Local car audio dealers told me that because of the slightly bent fascia, a replacement would never fit properly. And on the Forum I find mixed (or far to specialised for me to understand) info.
CafcPete directed me to Incartec in the UK, but they reacted kinda doubtful so I'm just double checking.
Just wanted to ask what type of radio (and side equipment) you used to replace the original AJ9500 and if you succeeded in making it 'blend in smoothly with the center console'... or not.
Sound is awful right now. Probably the Harman Kardon speakers need fixing or replacing as well, but I would first like to try another radio (hoping to avoid futher dismantling).

Speaker surround foam rot is common on the X300 and this is the dimensions of the standard option " Philips " vs. the premium option " Harmon Kardon " speakers . in ordering the repair kit I got the wrong repair number or I could have been wrong , that would be rare .
Your rear 5th woofer speaker is a 6 x 9 shallow mount dimension because of the fuel tank coming up against it , that makes it hard to find a replacement substitute

Ah, I remember this thread from long ago. It is truly an adventure! I think Firecrow ended up selling his Jaguar "Gato Grande". He's not been around here for a long time. I'm going to relive the adventure today...
The radio is DIN 1 so any will fit all the way into the dash, but the front faceplate might not look right. You can go with it as is, fabricate another faceplate surround, or buy the adapter for the dash that Pete advised. That is purely cosmetic. With the wiring, you can either splice into the car's speaker wires, or buy the wiring adapter for the X300 to plug into the new head unit. There is info here about connecting to the original premium amp with a new head unit. But I don't know if a shop would take on a job like this. I doubt it.

Thank you both then for chipping for FireCrow!
Think I will take the matter to a guy I know that knows his way around car electronics far better than I do. If he says he can do it, I'll follow Pete's lead to the fascia at Incartec for the finish. I still have a front and rear cam to hook up to a power source, and I think the (new) radio may be a good idea, so that could be a win-win.
And good to know about the rear woofer too

Gentlemen, I am alive, although the car is no more... A lot of things have happened in the meantime, but the basics of the story are the more I started digging the more problems I've found with the car (needing to rebuild gearbox, differential, extensive welding required etc, rough body work, rough interior) I ended up scrapping the car as I needed to move to a village about 50 miles away (on a very short notice, that was pure madness), where I wouldn't have any space to keep it or restore it. It is a shame, as I did like the car a lot.
Back on topic of the radio, I've purchased ISO to Jaguar harness adaptor on eBay for probably around 7GBP, and as said here, a standard single DIN radio fits absolutely fine in the hole left by original radio. It's not going to sit at an angle as the original radio's face, but it fits so it sits (see the cat reference there?). You could purchase a fascia adaptor, few of them kicking about on eBay too, but it's only going to slightly adapt the space around the radio without actually changing the angle it sits at. I have not managed to replace the speakers, but on those Jags in my opinion it's better to upgrade radio and speakers at the same time.

Glad to hear you're alive, sad to hear the opposite about the car. I must say I have my moments of doubt as well about my XJR because I keep running in to all sorts of problems. But I've invested so much over the past 1,5 yrs that I am beyond the point of no return. So I'd better make her as comfy as possible for at least the next 7-8 years (that's my aim). She will then be an official 'oldtimer' according to Belgian law and maybe target a new audience (at least if I don't grow to fond of her in the meantime).
Thanks for the extra info and advice!
Hope you run into another nice car/project.
It was fun to read your thread

Welcome back Firecrow! Great to see you jump back in here straight away.
Many changes since then. This thread brought back memories for me, being that at the time I was a triple-Jag owner. Around 2014 I "retired" my dark green Vanden Plas because of it's conditions, both old and new. It donated a lot of parts to the others, and stocked me up on spares. But I always missed that car despite it's conditions! I was right at the decision point where I had invested a lot, but not too much to make the tough choice, as you did Firecrow.
More positively, my son borrowed and then purchased my original XJ6 and drove it for 4 years. It wasn't without problems either, but was my first love. It now resides with a friend of his, who was thrilled to pick it up for a song and it is reportedly still "mobbing" at near 200k!
Might you return to the Jag experience again? I can attest that finding a car that has a good history and was cared for is worth the extra quid. And still cheap. Not so easy to find, but that has been my experience with my XJ12. This one stays with me forever! Probably.
