If you mean a MY 95, then there ain't one! the glove box was deleted in order to fit the passenger air bag. It came back in MT 96.

You can retrofit them - easily, I think.

Not sure about the lock though... Does anyone know if glove box locks are actually tailored for the car's key, or if any X300 style key will open them?

EDIT: And the light for that matter. Did early X300's have a glove box illumination wire, even if it wasn't used? Don't suppose it would be hard to install a new wire anyway.

It seems that JackJ (who posts here) has attempted a swap:

My 11 year old very adeptly and gently removed the glovebox from the 97 VDP while I removed the knee shield area of the 95 XJ6. When we tried to switch, I found three things.

#1. Not all creams are equal. What looked to be the same color from 20 feet apart was definitely not the same color when placed in the vehicle.

#2. The glovebox from the VDP would not bolt up to the base of the airbag mount. The screw holes did not line up properly...

...So, we reassembled things back into the proper cars and left things in their original state...

So some modification/new screw holes required to retrofit?

Well, I started down the path of installing the '96 glovebox in my '95. I (uncharacteristically, for me) let discretion stop me when I determined I had to remove a stiffening bar and remove several mm of metal along an edge the length of the box on the dash frame. All of this in the area of the passenger airbag mount. Oh, and I cracked the donor glovebox mount trying to wedge it in. So, project abandoned and I put it back together. I would buy a letter folder at the office supply and put it under the seat!

The glove box was reinstated part-way thru the 1995 model year. For some reason "February 1995" is in the back of my mind. Not sure about that.

My 6/95 XJR has one, though :-). Ross, what's the build date on yours?

I've heard but never confirmed that Jaguar offered a retro-fit kit.

On my car the regular ignition key works in the glove box.

Cheers

The reason "February 1995" was in the back of my mind is because the addition of the glovebox was announced in the "1995 Technical Update" (JLM 18 15 12/55) which is dated "2/95".

That might not be when the actual change took place, though.

I really should be out in the garage tending to a few items on my Jag but it's too cold. Much more pleasant to stay inside and research Jaguar trivia :-)

Cheers

What I was asking is, if you retrofit a glovebox assembly from a donor car, will you be able to lock it with your own key.

However, I've answered my own question just now; I tried the key from my 1995 XJ Sport in a 1996 XJ6's glovebox. It locked, but would not unlock.

So if you install a glovebox from another car, you will not be able to lock it.

I'm going to reiterate from my experience. We could not get a 97 glove box to fit into a 95 XJ6. We tried and it just wouldn't line up. It may be able to happen with a lot of retrofitting, however one must be very careful with the airbag. Make sure to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery first and then the airbag itself. That way you cannot jar it into action.

Where there is a will, there is a way. You also need to make sure that the glovebox matches the rest of the interior, if that matters to you.

The real joke is that the glovebox on any of these cars is barely big enough to hold a few envelopes and a pencil. There is a place for the car manuals, but that's tailored to fit.

Good luck.

Doug:
I don't know my date code. I guess I never thought about it, but I will check.

Oubadah:
I'll bet you could lock it. At least my doors lock with the wrong key. I found that out after locking my XJR using the XJ8 key in the door lock, while IT'S only key was laying on the seat. Its the unlock that is a problem.

Yep, I've done that too. Using my key I locked my dad's X300 while his key was still in the ignition. He had no spare either.

The AA guy made short work of it though - just pulled off the lower window trim/seal and stuck something down in there to pop the catch. I guess that guy will have a nice backup 'trade' if he ever loses his job.

True, but the trunk is rather annoying, I have to really slam it hard for it to shut properly.

Sounds like the latch needs adjustment. It should latch with just a gentle push with your hand ... or if you let the trunk lid drop from maybe 2"

I just put it ajar and then apply pressure until it clicks. Everyone else uses the slam method though.

If your struts and seals are healthy, I shouldn't think a 2" drop would do it...
