Engine light o
1995 XJ6 VDP
94 000 original miles
Car runs like new
Does not burn a drop of oil
Starts when you just show the key
Yesterday check engine light came on
Any suggestions?
I will not go to a Jag garage or dealer as I know this is an attempt to robbery
Thanks for your help

Quite possibly a DIY repair but first you need to find out the fault code that triggered the light.
You can buy and inexpensive "code reader" that will pull and erase the codes or spend a bit more and buy a rudimentary "scan tool" that will pull and erase codes and provide live data as well.
Or....swing by your local auto parts store. Nowadays most of them will check for trouble codes as a no charge courtesy gesture
With the trouble code we can give repair suggestions.
Cheers

I'd bet on a P0411 but that's just speculation.
If you have an android smart phone, you can get by for <$30 with an ELM 327 Bluetooth adapter and the Torque app - which will give you live-data scanning and recording capability.
As far as i know, you will have to go north of 10X that to look at chassis and other non-OBDII powertrain codes....say, if your ABS light should illuminate or something.
