Default Engine oil drain plug washer

A minor thing, but I recently read in an old thread that an M20 metric dowty washer will fit the sump drain plug (i.e. engine oil sump). They look pretty much right in the pics on ebay, clearly showing the inner rubberized seal.

If they are suitable, there are plenty of generics for around 6 times cheaper than the OEM part EBC9044 ($7-8 dollars for a single washer from Heritage is ridiculous, although not surprising).

I'm wondering if the profile of these washers is the same as the OEM part and seals just as effectively, has anyone used them??

A Dowty washer is a Dowty washer.

Mine had a Dowty on it when I got it 3 years ago, and its still there and just fine. Oil changed every 4 months (kms travelled unrelated).

Jaguar do not "make" that washer. It is a washer, and sourced from the manufacturer that wins the tender on that day. The same goes for nearly every component in any car out there.

OK, in the "good old days" car building was very different, and manufacturers did actually make a lot of components for whatever they were building.

Thank Grant. And yes I'm aware of shared componentry, I know it's been common practice for decades.

So presumably all dowty's have the same profile regardless of manufacturer? I also assume the one Jaguar chose to designate as their OEM part is the self-centering type given the tight fit, although it appears there are also non self-centering types.

So the only other thing is to confirm that metric m20 is the right size.

Mine doesn't leak, but since I'm about to change the oil I felt like treating it to a new washer for the first time in 3 years.

I keep trying to remember to measure that damn thing every time I change the oil, and still have not done so, BUT, 20mm sounds about right.

I bought 5 plugs and washers for $7 and change about 3 yrs ago. Rock showing out of stock now, but is described as an M20 thread, so M20 is probably right:
