There is a thing with the engine oil must expand the sliding piston on the timing chain tensioner
This is a source of start up chain rattle
If you have the revised tensioner, it will have a large cast arrow on the device

Just follow the chart. I live where it gets hot and cold. I use Castrol Edge 0w40 (full synthetic) and I change it every 7,500 miles, which ends up being about twice a year.
You seem to live where it gets very cold....not hot. 5w50 seems too thick for you, I would drop down to the 5w40 range...or use 0w40, certainly seems ideal for you.
