Default a few problems

hi guys, this is my first post on here.
Ive just come back to jags after a long break from them
(20 years). and with all cars now everything is electronic so nothing to hit with hammer.

I find the car lacking in power, going from 30 to 70
unless kick down comes in, takes forever to get there.
On my previous car a Vauxhall there was no need for an OBD reader as all that was needed was a bridge wire in the OBD socket and read off the code on the dashboard Engine Management Light, does this work on jaguars?
I tested out the coils and found one dead and replaced it, there are others with cracks in them
but they seem to be working on idle.
I have cleaned CPS.
Is there a knock sensor on these cars? and where? that's my
next check to do.
The car starts perfect from cold but if she is hot I have to
press gas pedal and it takes a good few cranks to get her going.
no smell of fuel and never seen any black/blue smoke from exhaust

cheers guys for your patience with me

As far asI know you will need an actual code reader/scan tool for your car. Others will chime in if I'm wrong.

The knock sensor is on the left side of theengine block. Blue connector, as I recall....and there might be two of them....one forward, one aft.

Beyond maintenance items and seeing if anything is visibly broken or amiss, I wouldn't spend too much time digging before seeing if there are any trouble codes to aid in diagnosis. That's what they're there for !

Sorry I can't offer anything very concrete. Others will have more

Cheers
DD

"See what it throws up", I like that. Persistant missfires, like the one you've fixed, can damage and eventually restrict the catalytic converters: that is one possibility consistant with your lack of power on acceleration. Another I have seen on X300 is low fuel pressure from a fuel pump that is getting ready to check out but hasn't quit yet. Fuel pressure gauge required to confirm.

The OBD socket on a U.S. car is adjacent to your right shin when you are sitting in the driver's seat. No clue on a RH drive car without looking at the JTIS, and seeing what it throws up.

thanks for the info, im pretty sure the cats have been removed, (if not they will be)
fuel pump was replaced a year before i bought the car, if i can find the fuel filter I'll pop a new one on.
going to swop some beer for the use of an OBD reader tomorrow night, if i can find where to plug it in.
may even get him to do a fuel check if i have extra beer with me..

many thanks

hi again,
just had a chat with chappy with OBD reader, he says that the car being a 1995 model
the onboard ecu does not store much info, its only from 1996 onwards that it will give out info on coils/misfires
unless its a dead part there's no use in running the test
is he lazy/thick or correct,,
cheers

oh the car ran perfect today not a hiccup
will have to see how she is in morning

my 95 XJR behaves perfectly with my OBD scanner. The US version may be slightly different, but yours should still throw codes. The most recent pertinent code mine read was a multiple cylinder misfire. I wouldn't believe him, but I could be wrong. It has been known to happen.

I do hate waxing in the winter. I may have a few extra coils I nabbed out of a yard if you're interested. I forgot how many I have, but shoot me a message and we can make something work.

Default RE: a few problems

hi again,, popped scanner on and all the info it gave me was P1621,, Fault 01 pass 01
P1621 - Engine control module engine immobilization input circuit malfunction (thanks to Keesh for the info)

but no other errors

so me thinks matey was correct, the obd jobby on a 1995 car is very basic and should have spent the money on beer insteed of a scanner

Default problem still there

this on going problem of the car just dying off mid cruise, the car tramps along perfect then just seems to die off, as if the power to the coil just cut off, if i put my foot down all ok,, but i noticed on way home yesterday that when this happens if i touch any button or switch it suddenly pops back into life..

could this be linked to the aerial/cd problem i have as this is also hit n miss

cheers

fuel filter located on the left rear portion before the rear left wheel, go underneath and you'll see it, a lot of aftermarket part and brand can be use, commonly use brand Fram (OEM)
