Default Glovebox oops...

My 95 came without a glovebox. Enter a 96 glovebox from Ebay. YAY!

I wanted to see if my key would lock it, and it did - YAY again.

Unfortunately, it does not unlock it. So, any ideas? I could ask the seller who is parting out the car to mail me the key to unlock it, he's pretty cool.

But, I wonder if there's a way to open it if the assembly is on my workbench. It's not in the car yet.

I chuckled reading this. Welcome to the tibbie keys. They LOCK every jag but only unlock the correct car (or glovebox in your case). I think those handles pop out of place kinda easily the just squeeze the two bars together behind there. You should see two angled ramps that the handle has. Look at what those ramps connect to and try and get them to move. Those are the bars that latch the ends of the door closed.

Have you checked to make sure the metal bracket that all the components mount to is back far enough out of the way where the glove box would go? I haven't had one of them opened up in years, so I cannot remember. Hopefully there is room.

Once I get it open again (and disable the lock), I will see how it fits. I miss a glove box.

I'm afraid you'll continue missing it. Do a search, someone had a 96 parts car and a 95 driver and tried to fit the glove box. Unsuccessfully. Good luck, I may be misremembering it, but I'm pretty sure he gave up after much effort.

Edit: Found the one I was thinking of:

Didn't remember the references to a possible retrofit kit. Haven't seen any postings of anyone who has found or tried one, though.

I believe that with a bit of patience and lubrication... damn, wrong one... with a bit of patience and right tools it can be done. And if there's someone who can actually do it, it'll be Tim! I think I might give it a go as well, if I get one I just bid on eBay

I'll give it a shot this winter. Don't bid too fast Firecrow, let me experiment first.

You will be cutting some sheet metal that is part of the airbag support before you get the glovebox installed. Maybe since it is just the passenger's bag you don't care!

Wow, pretty crass assumption. Of course I care about the passenger air bag. What a disrespectful comment. I'll assess it all when I get in there.

I am sorry my attempt at humor offends you. I will try and show you "respect" in the future.
BTW, the door locks will also lock with ANY Jaguar key, but only unlock with the correct Jaguar key.

I tried to fit a glovebox to my 95xj6 and ran into similar problems. It might well require some redrilling of the screw plate on the dash, which will require some way for you to secure the airbag. It would be awful for it to deploy during your retrofit!!!!!

The airbag problem is what stopped me.

Didn't win the oatmeal glovebox on eBay after all... oh, well, no more mods for me then... Got to put rest of bits back together and in a weeks time got to drive that beast to the port of Tilbury Tim, may the force be with you, I keep my fingers crossed, although I bet YOU can actually fit it!

I have considered adding the glove box. But after reading all the posts have decided not to attempt it. Also there seems to be a loss of leg room with the glove box installed. Instead I use the pouches at the front of each of the front seats to put stuff. They are a great idea. I don't know if they are unique to 95 or not. But they are better than a glove box in many respects. Jaguar done good that time.

Have you got a photo?

The (tiny) glovebox really isn't worth what sounds like quite a lot of bother to fit!

it's not that tiny... LOL. My wife of more than 2 decades has become quite used to the availability of a glove box. So, if I can do something to allow her to enjoy the car that much more, to me it's worth it.

I thought you were going somewhere else with that for a moment...

Fair enough though - I wish my car had few enough problems that I could contemplate the 'nice-to-have's!

I guess I could have found a better way to express myself.

I got the locked glove box open. The handle pops right off with the likes of a wide flat screwdriver. Pinch the locking rods together - watch out for that hidden spring in the locking rods.

Once I replace the lower rad hose and the burned up O2 sensor (thanks for welding so close to it exhaust guy) I'll start into retrofitting the glove box without employing or disabling the passenger air bag.
