Is there a way to test these things?

I don't even know which one(s) are causing the problem....

FWIW, I just had a bad coil replaced and it was a trial and error process. The techs couldn't get a reading on which cylinder was misfiring. I am not aware of any way of reliably bench testing the things, but perhaps another member has some useful info.

BTW, the faulty coil was almost new, replaced by the previous owner I presume. Clean enough to eat off, but useless. There were no markings on it except FS0300. Avoid!

I have just ordered 4 for spares, but I was charged about $60 USD for postage to NZ - does the free postage only cover the USA?

Bump to the top. I now have an mix of three different types of new coils on my XJR6:
-one new Airtex 5C1176 from an eBay auction, made in Japan
-two Eurospare W0133-1600012 from Partsgeek, not sure where they were made
-three LHE1510AB OEM coils from SNG Barratt, made in Japan

Previous to this, I had six old OEM coils with various levels of cracking in either the coil body or the dielectric material on top, and it was randomly stalling both at idle and while cruising. Now that I have six new coils, the stalling has completely stopped, and it overall runs fine. It looks a bit strange under the spark plug cover with the three different-looking coil tops, but without peeking you'd have no idea that there was a mix of suppliers.

Hey All.

My experience with Jag brand coils is that they lasted around ten years. This is in a 1995 XJ6 that I bought new and is still a daily driver.

I am on my third set of coils. The first two times I replaced all six coils at the same time so as to not have to fool with the frequency of changing the cheaper coils.

But now the Jag coils are prohibitively expensive. Today at the Little Rock Ar. dealer I was quoted a price of $530/per.

I've gotten some coils from my regular after market supplier at $40-50. They seem to last around one year. So recently I decided to buy six Chinese made coils for $100. I can change a coil in ten minutes or less even on the road and I keep the T30 driver and 8mm driver in my tool bag in the boot.

I'll let everyone know how that experiment turns out.

Hey, nice to see someone else in Arkansas!

You ever take scenic drives with other owners? We was thinking about inviting a couple of the other Jaguar owners we know in the state for a scenic caravan in a few weeks when the fall colors peak and drive the scenic road from maybe Petty Jean over and up Mount Magazine, then down and out the other highway and either up or down scenic highway 7.

I love it that you have owned your car 20 years and haven't been tempted by a newer model (no Rod Stewart, are you?)

..anyone for a VW ??

Thanks for all the helpful info, but I just have to point out--that's awesome that you haven't been tempted to replace your daily! I know I won't ever get rid of my cat, that's for sure. In fact, I think the person who sold it to me must have been a few screws loose to let it go.

Good on you for keeping her running, and best wishes to you and your car!

My car has 6 Lucas made-in-Japan coils. At 260,000 km I'm wondering when they were last replaced-certainly they can't be the originals, and I'm now worried that they were replaced around the 116,000 mark as that's the last stamp on the maintenance booklet for my car, though I know of the mechanic who's done the past 10 years of work on it. Fingers crossed that the previous owner shelled out for the outrageous OEM cost in recent years. No misfires or any funny business so far, aside from a few sputtering starts which seemed fairly benign as the car roared to life shortly after--maybe I let go of the key too soon?

Nothing else under the hood has been mickey'd on, and everything is OEM, even the belts. Here's hoping!

Hey Malihide.

I bought my first Jag new in 1982 after having a dream that I should buy a Jag?????? I drove that Jag until the 1995 Jag came out and I had to have one of those. I passed the '82 XJ on to my son who drove it through high school, college, and med school. His residency was "up north" and he didn't want to take it there so I got it back. He got it back after his residency.

I still have the '95 XJ and it has 225K miles now. I thought I would look for a fresher X300 Jag and found one on Ebay. I bought a '96 VP maybe three years ago for $5500. It had problems but I had already had them and knew how to fix them. That car is a wonderful car.

I do not like new cars, Jags included. I don't want a TV screen in the middle of my dash. I don't want navigation b/c I rarely drive anywhere that I haven't been before. When I fly and rent a car I get a nav unit with the car or bring my portable unit.

I also don't want I car that I have to take to the dealer every time something goes wrong.

So, that's more than you wanted to know I'm sure.

I'm 68. I bought a '96 XJS a few years ago and shortly discovered that that is a young man's car. I gave it to my son who still has it. It was a very cool car.

Wow, that's quite the history there, Bill.

I dreamt about buying a Jag for months before I found "the one". Needless to say, I've had quite a few more dreams since then, telling me to pick up a Series III and a MKII... and a Super V8, and an XKR, but most of all an XJC. The list continues to grow... But I'm happy with my X300 for now. Luckily my father owns a retired shop with a lift and a spray booth, so I'll surely be able to take on a few projects in the future.

We've gotten slightly off topic, but it's the cars' faults for being so darn collectible.

Default 94 4L Sovereign XJ and 96 3.2 X300 Litre Coils

Hey,

Does anyone know if these coils are equivalent?

My wife stacked her '94 Sovereign and my '96 X300 coils are giving me grief. Thought I might swap them out.

Cheers,

Phantom

Not sure about your neck o' the woods but a '94 would be an "XJ40" car here in the USA. It wouldn't have the coil-on-plug arrangement like the X300 cars. The coils would not interchange

Cheers
