Default Heated seats present ?

Hello Jaguar lovers,

I recently bought a nice brooklands green XJ6. I am newbie to Jaguar cars to be honest. I have owned few Rover cars and have some skills with cars already.

my first question is: How do I tell I have front heated seats in my car ? I am confused because I have the switches on the panel present as well as the fuses are in them place.

When I press the heat button I can’t hear no relay click, nor the light is on on the switch.

It’s a basic xj6 model so I am afraid that somebody just replaced the panel before me and I am hunting a ghost. Or maybe, it’s just faulty…

So, is there some easy way how to reckognise heated seats ? Some particular loom or relays under the seat or somewhere ? Only drivers seat is electric - up/down

Thank you !

The relay if present is the picture on page 27

titled LH front seat and RH front seat

under the front seats

But the wiring guide on page 122 does not show a relay

Aaa OK. I believe there is a brown socket under the seat. It’s empty in my case.

the diagram is too much for me, sorry. Whats does that mean it’s not showing any relay ?

The 2 pictures do not match as a relay is missing in the wiring guide

researching to see what the part number for the relay is and if there is one to swap and see if you get heat

Just a guess it could be the same as the 2 for the rear seats

Genuine Relays For Jaguar Xj 1995 - 1997 (from 720125 To 812255) Classic | Jaguar Land Rover Classic Parts

relay # 3 same as the fuel pump relay in the picture below

C2P11192

You will have to look around on the page for your VIN # as there seems to be some differences

That looks correct.

Thank you for your superb info Parker. I"ll take the brown relay number 1 from the picture and do some test. Then I"ll let you know.

Many thanks

So. Switching the relay did the trick. I hear it switching, the light on the button is ON. BUT I don't think the seat is actually heating. It ran for about 5 minutes and I didn't notice any significant difference. I guess there are no elements in the seats and the clocks were changed because of failed display.

Any thoughts ?

Thank you anyway

Look under the seat for a bright yellow two-pin connector. If it is vacant, you don't have the elements. (well, for 1995/96 the connector is yellow - I confess to not having checked my '97 for such.)

If it is connected, then you probably have the heating element but it has failed.

Hi aholbro1, thanks for input. There is 1 small yellow 2 pin connector under each seat, connected into it's place. I was wonder why there was that much wires under passengers seat (especially) when it's completely manual.

Anyway, I put the relay under passenger this time. All is working but still no heat after about 10 minutes. I don't know if both elements has died... I haven't tried that with both relays in place yet, but I doubt it matters.

The elements are in SERIES so if one failed......NO HEAT from either.

Great point. Solution is to tear apart the seats and replace the blankets I guess...?

The upper and lower heat elements are connected at the hinge point somewhere so EACH can be checked for continuity and the faulty one replaced.

Unplug and check each one individually?

Time to think about replacing the front seat skins and not being a seat skin cover ?

There are threads on replacing them and the material cost is reasonable

my leather seats are in really good shape still I think.
As motorcarman suggest:

What if I put in place both of these relays as I only tried that with only one in place at a time. Maybe the series is not complete like that ? I have to get spare relays then first.

Looks like the same relay is used on the left engine bay fuse box as this relay in reality is only the horn

Most of the fuses in the left engine fuse box bypass this relay and are hot at all times battery direct wired
