Well, I didn't hold my tongue just right, so we could easily be describing the same distance. If I owned an X300 and was serious about considering the change, a pair of mounting brackets salvaged from an XJ40 might be well worth the low cost for experimentation.
But that leads to other questions: Did Jaguar install other components at the front inner corners that might interfere with mounting XJ40 brackets in an X300? Is the height of the lamps the same relative to the inner framework, or is the X300 front end compressed vertically?
I'll leave it to you guys to figure out!
Cheers,
Don

The rear light was for quick recovery after getting lost during navigational stages.

On a X300/X308 they would go one on each side of the center riser in the grill.
Or to exactly duplicate the setup, cutback the bumper in the center, skin as required, mount lights. (about as easy as "installation is the reverse of removal")

Not that I would say no to a M3 convertible. Beautiful lines, and huge aftermarket for parts.
edit:
third vote for 7.25 inches horizontal separation. the X308 headlights have vertical bars at the center of the headlight behind the lens which makes it easier to judge.
