Machi477, what that light is telling you is that your washer fluid level is low. If you have filled the washer fluid bottle and you still have this light, then odds are your level sensor in the bottom of the washer bottle is either stuck/gummed up or the circuit for that has failed. If you need more info, let me know.
P.S. This is the forum for X-Types, not the XJ6's. If you look, there is a section for the X300's for your year. That is what the body style is known as and covers a lot of the Jags from those years.

On my 83 XJ-S, that light was definitely the radiator coolant level; the sensor was up high on the right side of the tank. Isn't the symbol for washer fluid shaped like the swept pattern the wipers make with a squirt drop or something? If it is red, it is coolant because that is more serious. If it is yellow, it is washer fluid as that is more an inconvenience. That has always been Jaguar "code."

It's the low coolant light, not the washer fluid light. The washer fluid light is amber in color...yours is red which is for engine coolant. The sensor for it is located under the reservoir (you can reach the harness and feel the sensor without removing the reservoir). Top off your coolant and perform a pressure test to find out where your system is leaking

I JUST had this issue earlier today with my 1997 Xj6L, and I resolved it. Your problem is one of two.
1. Your coolant level is low, add some more.
2. The sensor has fallen out. It will do this with ease. The sensor is located on the far side of the reservoir near the bolt for your shock. If the sensor is out, don't worry about it leaking coolant the way it is designed, it wont. Just pop the sensor back in (it looks like a 2-3 inch long off white stick). If you cannot do this easily, just remove the retaining bolt holding the reservoir in place to make it(the sensor) easier to put back in. The bolt is located under some of the plastic bit in the engine bay alongside the reservoir. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
