First You Will Need To Buy Oil And Oil Filter!



Consult Your Local AutoZone Or Auto Part Store For Fluid Type And The Parts!

I will Be Using 10-30 Part Synthetic And STP Oil Filter


Be Safe Always Use A Jack And Jack Stands OR A Ramp!

Gather The Tools And Parts You Will Need For The Job

1. Blanket To Lay On And Keep Oil From RUINING The Floor
2.Oil Pan To Catch The Old Oil
3. Socket Wrench And 30MM Socket
4. Funnel With Screen To Filter OIL

Set Ramps Under Wheels Evenly

1. If The Ramps Slide When Going Up Them, Just Reposition Them


Drive Up Ramp

1. Make Sure Wheels Are Not FALLING OFF The Sides Of Ramps!
2. Set Car In Park And Let Engine Cool OFF!

1.Pull The Hood Release Lever

2.Open The Hood From By The Windshield




After Hood Is Open
1.Find The Oil Cap On Top Of The Engine

2.Remove Engine Oil Cap

Prep Work Area Under Car

1.Place Blanket Under The Car In Work Area

2. Place Oil Pan Catch On Top Of Blanket Under Oil Pan Bolt



Drain Oil From Engine

1.Place Socket Wrench With 30MM On Oil Pan Bolt

2.Make Sure You Turn Left To LOOSEN And Right To TIGHTEN

Drain Oil From Engine

1. Once Bolt Is LOOSE, Thread The Bolt OUT With Your Hand.

2.Do Not Drop Bolt Into The OIL Pan Catcher

3. Let Oil Drain Until None To Little Is Coming Out.

4.Place Bolt Back In By HAND

5. Grab Rag And Clean Bolt Before You Tighten The Bolt To 50-60 Nm ( NEVER OVER TIGHTEN THE BOLT DANGER)

6.Clean The Bolt And Area Around It!

Locate Oil Filter

1.Place Hand Down Into The Spots Listed Above

2.Unscrew The Filter By Turning LEFT

3.Bring The Filter Up And Out To THE LEFT HAND SIDE


Prep New Oil Filter


1. Set Old Filter Next To New And Dip Finger Into Old Filter For Oil Or USE NEW OIL IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO RISK IT

2.Wipe The Oil Around The Black Seal Of New Filter
3. Install New Filter And Tighten To The RIGHT BUT NEVER OVER TIGHTEN OR IT WILL GET STUCK. Hand Tight Is Right



Fill Oil And Be DONE!

1.Poor 8.5 Quarts Into The Engine

2. Once Done Check Dip Stick For Proper Level.And Close Engine Oil Cap

Nice write up.

A few of things though.

1. With the car up on stands, I find it much easier to replace the filter from under the car.

2. You say don't over tighten the drain plug but the spec is to tighten with 50-60 Nm of torque which is a fair bit.

3. On the other hand one thing I often see people do is over tighten the filter. Big no no andI think worth mentioning to people who have never done it.

4. A small point perhaps but I would only use clean oil to lube the new filter as the old stuff might have deposits that could harm the seal.

I did not find it easier to do from under neath but i am 6'2
I have almost dropped it and got oil in my FACE
so i try to get from top if i can and its not hard at all

When i was young i turned to tight on a drain plug
because some one told me to make sure it was super tight
or it would leak oil
i ended up TURNING way to tight needed a new pan and plug ><
and the gasket for the pan as well


yah turning the oil filter sucks but it wont cost u like the oil bolt did.
worst case stick a screw driver in it for torque lol

i guess i could use clean oil and i do some times but i have never had any problems/ nothing a new filter cant handle

Nice write up. Great pics. I'm with AllanG on pulling the filter out the bottom, but I'm nowhere near 6'2". I've done it both ways and can see where top-side would be easier if taller. On the plus-side, if you drop it from either position, it'll make a bit of a mess. One way you'll have oil all over the floor, the other? Well not much to clean up on the floor, but....I have an outside shower behind the shop......

Also, I may be old school but I've always changed my oil with the the engine hot. Obviously you have to be a little careful removing the plug but it helps remove more of the harmful deposits, you get more oil out and it drains faster

Lately I have been proscribing to the 'Grant Francis' method whereby I add a quart of ATF to the engine oil and run the car for 30-60 mins. Then I get her up on the stands and immediately drain the block. For my new XJ6 it was amazing how much junk came out!!

Hmm i have never heard of such a claim..

i know that you can burn yourself pretty bad with hot fluid..
so if you decide to try what alleng is saying

were thick gloves, safety glass's and BE CAREFUL


it makes sense to me why it would come out faster and more junk would come out at a hot temp.



what i do every 15,000miles

is dump Sea Foam into the engine oil. I norm crack the bolt and let just A VERY LITTLE OIL COME OUT.

i then follow the instructions on the bottle and add it to my oil.

i drive 300miles and then drain.


should help remove carbon and other built up deposits in the engine

Default Oil changing tip

Here's a tip.

Always change the oil filter first, then drain the oil.
Removing the oil filter will sometimes break an air lock in the engine resulting in additional oil returning to the oil pan.

I discovered this by accident one time during an engine rebuild. Lots of dirty oil on the floor. :-(

Ramps? Jack stands? Blanket to lay on? Oil pan? 30mm socket?
Bah, humbug!!

I use an oil extractor.

* Drive 4-5 miles, pull into garage,
* Make a vodka\ginger ale
* Pull dipstick tube out,
* Snake oil extraction hose down dipstick tube, turn on pump
* Strategically place lawn chair, sip on drink.
* Oil extracted? Turn off pump and remove extraction hose
* Replace oil filter with new one.
* Reverse pump, remove oil filler cap, place suction hose into fresh oil jug
* Snake oil delivery hose into cam cover, turn pump on
* Sit in strategically placed lawn chair, sip on drink.
* Fresh oil pumped? Turn off pump and remove delivery hose, replace oil filler cap.
* Finish drink.
