Default Instruments & radio dead, "Er" code on air-con

All,

For a week now I've been having a weird problem. When I turn the key, the following happens:
- none of the instruments work
- no warning lights briefly come on
- the radio doesn't work
- the air-con beeps and gives "Er" message

I have a couple of clues:
- I had this problem a week ago, after letting the car sit for a while. And while driving I pressed the "Alarm lights" button (triangle) and suddenly everthing came to life (radio, instruments, etc.)
- The instrument lighting works.
- the "Alarm lights" and central locking buttons work
- All the buttons regarding the air-con work (haven't verified if it actually blows cold air)
- The car works fine otherwise.
- I'm hoping it's something in the console as I have opened it a few times to address the non-working clock (which I have now accepted as not working).

I am suspecting a faulty wire, but I haven't managed to find out which one, (there are so many and it's hard to find out which ones to verify)
I do have a voltmeter and verified that the power-wires to the radio work fine. (12.45 volts). So far I have opened up the console and just removed the instrument-cluster and sprayed connector with "contact-spray".

thanks for you help,

Eelco

edit: some new findings:
- when I connect the instrument panel with the power on, all dials come on correctly, however when I then put the power off and on again, all dials are dead again
- when I clear all fault codes and rerun a selftest, it sometimes comes back without faults and sometimes with faults 14, 24 and 11

Default same name, same problem

Hi Eelco,

I have spoken some Jaguar specialist about exaclty the same problem. Including the panel working while connected after starting the engine, and dead again when starting the car with a connected panel.

Apart from checking all the wires, grounds and fuses, we have tried:
- replacing the instrument panel for a known working one
- replacing the car's computer for a known working one
The problem wasn't solved though.

It's my current guess that the problem is connected to a possible ABS sensor fault (I don't know for sure). Recently a new problem was added: the external computer cannot connect to the car's computer. So I cannot check for ABS faults.

Did you have better luck?

Regards, Eelco

Default ER

I don't know about your other problems, but I'm pretty sure the ER on the AC panel is the ambient /external temperature sensor in the left wheel well. It is one of the things I Have to fix.

Default it's a power problem

Hi,

I checked the wiring diagram and started checking voltages. I found out that in the fuse box in the boot there are a couple of fuses behind the ignition switch. Which means they should get power when the car is turned on. I found out they had no voltage when the car was on, so I wired power from a different fuse (which is always on even when the car is off and ignition ley removed) to supply power. This solves the problem and everything works.

However it's a hack with 3 things that need sorting out:
1. Find out where the power isn't coming. The wire to the ignition key has to be traced.
2. The airbag warning is almost always on, why is this?
3. Sometimes the ABS light comes on, why is this?

Hope it helps,

Eelco
