Great to hear that big numer. Would you mind telling us what all you had to do to her to get that much mileage out of her?

Thats the problem... You cannot say why a failure did not happen!. I used synthetic oil, changed at the manufacturer's recommended 10,000 miles. It is foolish to change it more often in my anything but humble opinion. I never changed the tranny fluid- I just did not get to it. And I drove it like I drive all my cars, hard.
People are always claimingthe value of some particular snake oil, marvelous oil, injector cleaner, and so on) by saying they used it and have not had a problem, but, of course, that proves nothing.
Although I am not normally superstitious, BUT the low mileage spare engine and transmission I have for it sitting in the rack in the garage is probaly the real reason the original never blew up.
Not to say I had no problems. Along with body and trim problems too numerous to count (headliner, bumper mounts, heater core, heater pump, lamp holders, sunroof tracks, shocks, suspension parts etc), I repaired the ABS module, replaced and calibrated the TPS, replaced the ISSC, replaced the MAF, hooked the hose back on the fuel pump, replaced the rear end bearings, set up the pinion, changed several wheel bearings, a bunch of brakes, and much more I cannot remember. Note that none of these have a thing to do with how often the engine oil is changed or what additive you put in it!
So, all in all, it certainly was not without problems, but I did all the diagnostics and repairs myself, except alignment, so it really did not cost a lot to keep her going. And she was reliable and only let me down once- the fuel pump hose.
I have often offered my opinion that these cars can be good daily drivers, but they can cost a fortune if you are paying someone else to work on them. And there are few other cars of their vintage as nice to drive. Heck, they are nice to just sit in and admire!

Have had my '95 XJ6 since 9/97. don't remember how many miles it had on it. was off lease car, so i'll guess around 30K. now has 203K miles. has not been driven regularly for the last 5 years, except during the summer months when my son is home from college.
clear coat pretty ugly on it now, since it lives outside. sorry guys, but she had to give her space to my '86 560SEL some years back.
i've run synthetic or synthetic blend oil all the time during my ownership. i think the most expensive thing i ever had to do was replace a failed rear wheel bearing and spindle (i think mileage was less than 100K when that happened). I had all the dealer services done up to about 130K. after that, just maintained the basics myself.
A/C no longer works. i think it needs evaporator or expansion valve. there's a blockage somewhere as i get low side negative suction and high side pressure.
engine and transmission are original. dealer replaced EGR valves a few times in the first couple years i owned it as i kept getting check engine light.
i replaced all four O2 sensors myself years ago. thanks to online parts source i could afford it. dealer wanted over $2000 to replace O2 sensors!!!
pretty significant front end rattle now... something rubber has worn out somewhere. no discernable play in the tie rods so i'm thinking front shock bushings??
guess that's enough rambling on.... cheers.
oh just remembered after reading another post about exhaust manifolds... had those replaced too... that might have been the most expensive thing done so far.

1996 X300 with 157,000 miles ( approx 251,000 Km) and counting. Usual saggy headliner and drivers seat memory not working, clock display works sometimes, hole in drivers seat leather, steering wheel color is worn in places. Had a few weeks of the transmission light going on and the car stalling a few months ago. Recently replaced front lower bushings and ball joints. Everything else runs and works fine and I got a great deal on the car to start with.

Currently at 293,XXX miles. Same issues as Tom, but the transmission light only comes on going up hills once every couple months then shuts off when the engine cools off. Seat and headliner are same, plus the center armrest is horrid and all the front bushings need replaced. The sunroof no longer works either (I believe a cable is broke, not too important right now). Engine seems to be running strong, but without driving a lower mileage X300, I have nothing to compare it to. Not much in the way of oil leaks either. Over all, for $1800, I believe I made a good decision in buying this car and I have no plroblem putting a lot of work into it.

I bought my 96 XJR two years ago. Got it from Rancho Mirage, CA. This was a desert car so the paint was completely toast. Did a total re-spray, fix countless little silly things and then systematically went thru the common problem list. (costly)
No issues, less than a broken wire in the trans harness and installed the very last trans temp sensor left in the US. Currently at 101,000 miles and all is well. OK, maybe not...just a drivetrain clunk when first pulling out of the driveway in the morning and some vibration at highway speeds.

Bought my '95 a couple months at 67,500 and have got it up to 68,800 already. A few small things that need my attention but it's an amazingly well cared for cat. I was lucky to wander into the deal. Mine wasn't the only offer but I think my wife and I got it because our mechanic who works on our XJ-S knows we're freaks for wanting to keep our big cats nice.

Well mine's only done 148,000 miles so far.
Problems are minor, and I need to work out how to fix them. I tend to see car maintenance as a learning opportunity, not a spending opportunity.
Drivers door trim started to fall off some time back, essentially because it seemed that somebody had taken it off wrongly and not bothered to fix the damage they had done. A few new clips and puddle-light and all is well there.
The rear bumper seems to be sagging a bit on one side - I've no idea even how to take it apart yet, but got to fix it.
The door mirror adjustment has gone crazy ! Each mirror will only move in one direction and the driver's side always moves no matter where the selector switch is. This is the 'memory seats' model. I've carefully looked over the switch module and it seems fine, so I'm worried.
My understanding is that with good lube and cooling, these straight-sixes will just keep on going on. Run them on old cheap dirty oil and let them over-heat and it kills them. I reckon that oil, coolant, filters and hoses are much cheaper and easier to change than engines so its pretty much a 'no-brainer' !

228,400+ miles. Still running like a Swiss watch. I need to replace the leaky steering rack, but I've just been running thick "Motor Honey" for the time being, which get's me 2 weeks between top ups. (I actually much prefer the firmer feel of the motor honey as opposed to steering fluid, go figure)
