Default Issue with Paint Matching

Hey everybody, I have a '95 XJ6 and went into my garage today to refinish the rear fenders since the paint back there was bubbling and the metal rotting. I had ordered some paint from expresspaint by the color code on the inside door jam...HFE...comes up Kingfisher Blue. I always thought my Jag was british racing green or at least close to that color, but I figured maybe the Brits were just whacky and decided to call the color blue. Not the case! The color isn't even close to matching. This leads me to believe the car may have been repainted at some point, but I have seen many other X300s with the same exact color so I'm thinking it must be an OEM color. I'm attaching a few pics of the car for reference and am hoping somebody can point me in the right direction to get this color matched up. Right now I'm driving the car with painters tape all over the rear fenders as I'm embarrassed to let the paint show right now! Thank you

Mine is that color from the factory. I don't know why the tag would be wrong, however if you find a DuPont or PPG retailer they have a laser paint match system they can put on your paint and make an exact match.

I am a auto restorer and this has came up a few times on the older GM reds and blues. Let me know if I can be of any help.

Brian, thanks a lot for the help. Glad to meet another guy working in the automotive industry. I've been working as a mechanic for the past 5 years or so and am finally leaving and going back to college to pursue computer security. I contacted expresspaint and provided them with photos of a sprayout held up against my car. They seem to think their was an error while mixing the paint, so they apologized and are sending me out a new can. I'm hoping it matches this time...if not I will look for a DuPont retailer or the like. Thanks again!

Yes........I believe that PPG also offers the paint match. They put a sensor on the paint (has to have metal backing not plastic) and can come up with a blendable match at about 90%. Makes life real easy for me.

If you need anything let me know.

That car is BRG, and I am pretty sure the OEM code is 753.

That's odd sparkenzap...the code on the inside of my door says HFE for Kingfisher blue. The color looks a bit darker in one of the photos than it is in person. Expresspaint told me they found out the can of paint they sent me has a missing toner in it, so they agreed to mix me up another can and send it out free of charge. I'm awaiting it's arrival and will report back afterwards. Thanks for the help to the both of you

That's the correct color. Jaguar calls it Kingfisher Blue. It's more green than blue, but that is the correct color and paint code. The British Racing Green is much more green than that.

Yes sparkenzap the pictures I provided to make it look darker in color than it really is...it is lighter with a hint of blue but mostly green. Ken is correct and I sent him a PM. In the meantime I'm trying to find other paint specialists I can try to get a correct match. Jag looks awful right now with primer and painters tape over the fenders

Update....automotive touch-up had the correct color. My paint code indeed was correct, just express paint couldn't match it correctly (by a LONG shot!). I contacted them afterwords to let them know their competition beat them in this area, but still thanked them for refunding my money promptly. So in short, if you're looking for aerosol paint in a can to fix a boo-boo area the cheap way, automotive touch-up is the way to go for a correct match

Sounds like you have sorted it out. But just in case, or if anyone else is struggling.
This link will take you to a site displaying a Jaguar paint colour chart, codes and model years.

Some codes do not match because of years of fading and some error in mixing the paint at the shop. Also quality of paint. I use DuPont their Chroma line is the best they have and they can get me a 90% match on repairs and with that I can blend so your eyes never see.

DuPont Nason line is excellent for all over repaints but if they do a color match with it I may only get a 50% match and that is when you see red..black...or cars panel painted that have a shade diffrent.

Yeah express paint insisted that it wasn't an error, and the color was so far off it certainly wasn't from years of fading. Their excuse is they simply must have had the "incorrect formula" for that particular paint code, which is why I posted my findings here so somebody doesn't have to jump through loopholes the way I did. Automotive touchup had the correct code and I'm quite happy with the results. I'm a mechanic and not an autobody guy, so the only thing I'm not happy with is the fact the color, even with the addition of some aerosol clear coat and my makita buffer, still has a flat appearance compared to the original clear coat on the rest of the vehicle. When sitting in the rain it's a non-issue, but while in the day light or at night time with another vehicle's headlights shining on it it's very apparent and an eye-sore. I take it it's the best it will probably ever get without a professional repaint, and that's the price I'm paying for fixing my rear fenders the cheap way!
