Leak at differential where axle flange mounts
My rear axle flange is leaking. Would like to know what is involved in replacing the seal. Is it worth changing the fluid and cleaning the breather to see if that stops the leaking? And also where is the breather and how difficult is it to clean.
I am considering getting a pretty good indy near by to do the work. Does this require a lot more experience than he and I would have?
Thanks guys.

Adding to that.
I would clean the breather (known issue with these cars), and it is located on the diff backing plate, RH side waaaaaay up there above the fill hole. You will possibly "feel" it more than actually see it. Get some p/pack degreaser/brake cleaner/whatever, and a tooth brush and go for it.
I did mine, took about an hour, but I am slow, and then I changed the diff oil with Synthetic oil, washed the output shaft area (it was only damp with oil), and checked again a month later, DRY.
That is always my first suggestion, CLEAN oil/fluid in the suspect component, it does wonders mostly.

I've taken your question as referring to replacement of the the pinion flange oil seal and not the bearing.........?
Here's the procedure for replacing the seal:

The Parts Manual illustration makes the layout a bit clearer:

I have the same problem. The previous owner paid to have both sides done a couple of years ago, but I think they only did the right. Or maybe the shaft is scored. I will replace this winter sometime. It's not a big job, but I'm in no rush to get my hands dirty right now. Differential Bearing/seal Kit - DIFF.KIT.X300
