Hello,
I have my X300 from 1996 with 96000mi now and the rear differential is leaking. I do not see sign of leaking on the ground but definitely is leaking as you see in the pictures.
Now I had it fixed already 6 months ago but it was leaking from another location. Now seems like it is leaking where the main rod enters the rear differential. Is gonna be quite expensive to fix and I wonder if I could just add fluid from time to time.
If so which kind of Oil should I use for the rear differential ?
thank you
On the earlier Jags the diff breather was on the upper RH side of the diff end plate, and cleaning that sucker every now and then stopped a ;lot of that mess I see there.
The plastic breather cannot be removed with the rear cover in-situ. There is a clip on the INSIDE that holds it.
The pinion seal can be replaced with the diff in-situ.
I had the same problem with the seal around the half shaft output. It was significant too. What is happening is the pressure is building up caused by the breather not breathing. What I did was rotate the plastic breather you see on the backside of the diff. That stopped the leakage. Every time I have the car on a hoist I do that . Rotate it a bunch to times. Just back and forth a bunch of time now and then. I can feel that there is some contamination in it. But rotating it seems to let enough air out to avoid pressure build up.
