Default Leaking starter fluid!!!

I have a 97 xj6 with an oil leak that appears to be from an o-ring on a galley plug behind the adapter plate for the trans.

I plan on tackling this job but want to make sure I have all the required parts before I start. The diagrams I can see show little of the back end. Is this oil galley threaded or do I have to punch it out and replace? Am I barking up the correct tree? Any help help would be appreciated.

I cleaned the engine before starting to verify this was the leak.

The gallery plugs are threaded, one in the rear, as you mentioned, one in the front, under the timing cover.

Part # EAC2494. Look like an allen key for R&R.

I have not heard of them leaking, but anything is possible I suppose.

Most AJ16 oil leaks are from the top, and run down and appear to be from somewhere else. The "D" seals, part of the camcover gasket assembly are notorious.

A leak from that plug seems to be rare but has been known.

See this thread from @Qvhk

Thanks guys that was exactly what I was looking for! I already changed a lot of the parts that was listed in that thread including the oil pressure sensor, the gasket I ordered had integrated "D" seals to boot and still have the same problem... I guess it is time to get ready to remove the trans and go for the o-ring. Parts are ordered and should be here in about a week. Ill post a pic of the back with the plug when I get to swapping it. As always thanks for the help.

Figured I’d update. I got the tranny, and adapter plate out today. The galley plug is threaded and does not have an Allen key. It was getting dark and I didn’t have the right bolt for the plug so I called it. Still not too sure how the thing comes out yet. Hopeing to hit it again in the next few days.

as promised below is a pic of the plug.

Here is the leaking galley plug.

Was able to get the plug out today. the Treads in the back are for a 10-32 sized bolt. Mine I could pull by hand once I had purchase. A bear of a job for a o-ring leak.

I have this job coming up for my X300. Looking at this picture, I am correct in assuming I also need a new rear seal?

Can you please post a larger photo? I can enlarge what you attached.

Also, is there anyway to get there without disconnecting the transmission?

The tranny has to come out to get to the plug. It is frustrating for just the o-ring. When it comes to the seal for rear main and front trans seal, I would do them while there. Not mandatory, but you will be very glad you did. They are little work to do once the trans is removed. Best of luck!

Thank you. Much easier to me to see now.

Viton o-rings? Or did you just go with OEM parts?

If you can share the o-ring specs, that would be great. Diameter and thickness of the o-ring.
