Loud SAI pump during start-up

Loud SAI pump during start-up
'95 with 4.0L and ~78k miles. This has been going on since we bought the car about a yr ago. The screw ball dealer we bought the car from removed the CEL bulb in the display . Once I put in a new bulb, what do ya know? CEL on all the time with Secondary Air Injection code. I cleared it a few times, but it always returns.
Since we have owned the car, it has always had this loud grinding/rubbing sound only for a few seconds immediately once started. Does this system run the pump during every initial start-up? I am thinking I'm hearing the pump trying to run. Anyone heard this sound and had this problem?
Thanks in advance!

Yup, the pump runs only for a short while after start-up....maybe 30 seconds at the most on mine.
It should make a "zing" noise. Sounds like your is shot. I got a rebuilt for about $110 from the neighborhood parts store.
It's the very same pump as used on 95-96 Camaros and Firebirds with the 350 fuel injected engine.
Cheers

Oh and the exhaust check valve is bad as well. I remember seeing water in the pump. Also, when I removed the exhaust hose from the pump to the check valve, there was exhaust.
Advance Auto has a check valve for a '96 Camaro, but not for the Jag. It does list the exact same smog pump for both vehicles, but not the valve. The valve wouldn't be the same too, would it?

is this a "California emissions" feature? I've recently owned 2 '95 Z-28 Camaros and neither had an Air Injection pump.

So, I still have not fixed the SAI issue, but will now as I have the time. I know it needs a check valve, because there are always exhaust fumes exiting the hose coming from the exhaust manifold with it disconnected form the pump. Will this cause the pump to be real noisy, or do I likely need a pump as well?
