Default Is my harmonic balancer de-laminating?

146,000 US miles.

It appears the in-board pulley is "slipping". And yes, I'm getting the odd "sounds like a slipping belt, but doesn't sound like it".

So, inquiring minds want to know ... have I just joined the de-lam club?

Mark it with white-out. Start with a timing tooth and go across both ipulleys in a line. If they separate, it is delaminating....but it sure sounds like it

*Sorry* I was on mobile app in an area where data flowed like molasses in February...never saw a pic or even a li'l box with an x in it at the time!**

Thanks. As you can see in the photo I included, I did paint a white line from a timing tooth across all pulleys.

Granted, the angle of the photo is not from the front of the car, but the white paint stripe on the center (inboard) pulley has "moved" (maybe i need to improve the photo).

Sorry,

I read/responded on my phone and mobile app while in cell purgatory, I guess...very slow data speeds - there was no evidence of a pic between when I read your note and made a quick response.
But yes...it is failing....Damper Doctor will fix you up. Tough nut to crack at getting it off, in some cases, though!

I just bought a 1997 XJ6L with a faulty crank damper.
I have used Damper Doctor for my 1992 XJ6 and it was repaired for about $225.00

I was going to send my X300 damper to hbrepair.com but they are closed in September.

They advertise a price of $115 plus shipping.

I might wait until the end of Sep to save about a hundred bucks.

Bob,
Mine came to $257+chg with shipping...and I think it cost me about $25 to ship it out to them.

FWIW, I've used Dale Manufacturing several times with good results.

Does anyone know what the turnaround time is for Damper Doctor? I failed to ask in my email to them.

I asked if they had a damper on-hand, but they responded, "no, we'll have to repair yours". Cost for rebuilding is $218.35 Plus shipping.

I believe it is only a day of processing. Mine was a week from drop off at FedEx to sitting on my front porch rebuilt. Ground both ways

Thanks for the feedback. Seeing as we're both in Texas, I should expect a similar turnaround time.

(xj6 4.0L US spec, normally aspirated)

Is the size of head bolt holding the damper onto the crankshaft a 1 1/4", 1 5/16", or a 32mm socket?

I used an adjustable wrench to get a measurement and my results show 1 1/4 or 32mm, but i've read on a forum post 1 5/16". I've checked the repair manual and there is no designation.

Any ideas?

1 5/16" for mine. Shallow better than deep so you have some hope of using an impact wrench. I removed the fan module and radiator for additional purposes but in retrospect, it would've been necessary anyway as the starter wouldn't break mine loose

1 5/16th or 33MM, either will work. Most auto parts stores have a deep impact 33 on the shelf...it's for a truck suspension arm bolt, very common apparently. I got the 33 deep but everything else is in the way so I opted for a craftsman 1 5/16th shorter socket and that did the trick.

Mine has completely delaminated. i could turn the water and alt belt. and not to mention the horrific clanking noise when running

Now I was able to get the supercharger and a/c pulley off and also the giant bolt, thanks to Doug for recommending using the starter to break it loose, but for the life of me i cant get the dang thing off any suggestions?? how did you guys rip yours out?

If you got the bolt off...just install a puller to the two threaded holes in the pulley and ****** it out

Here's a webpage with a couple of images showing my utterly simple method of breaking loose (and installing\tightening) the harmonic balancer bolt. (Using the starter has scary implications).

XJ6 Harmonic Balancer removal

To install the bolt, simply reverse the way the serpentine belt wraps around the harmonic balancer. That serpentine belt measures 88 inches (from my '86 944), so any belt with 4-5 ribs and at least 88 inches should work.

To remove the harmonic balancer\pulley, simply use a pulley removal tool - for me, I had to use the puller (to slide off the harmonic balancer) almost the full travel of the crankshaft snout, so be patient.
