New to Jaguars
Hello, I have bought a XJ6 X300, 4,0L from 1997, with 189.000 km on the clock (I hope:-)). I am new to Jags, but it seems to be a fantastic care despite the age :-) I would like to learn the care to know, and ask for input what to take special care of.
I have a few questions:
1) What Oil do you recommend?
2) how much oil is needed?
3) Which filter do you recommend?
4) Seems like I have play in the steering wheel. Known problem?
5) How often do you change gear box oil? Can I change myself? What oil? How much?
6) Anything else I shall check / take care of / avoid?
7) I would like to have a new owners manual. Any ideas where to get it?
Looking forward to hearing from you :-)
Br. Thomas

Welcome to the Forums. Please do an Intro in the New Members Area when time permits.
Since you are in Denmark, i will nmot into brands, coz what we have here means zero to most others.
The X300 is rock solid, and loves fresh fluids, engine, trans, steer etc regularly. Over servicing will do NO harm.
1) I use 10W40 Semi Synthetic
2) 7ltrs from memory inc filter. Until its on the full mark on the stick.
3) Whatever is on special of a known brand. Genuine are NOT expensive.
4) NO. The rubber mount rings rot out from oil contamination. There is a spacer plate fix somewhere for that, but I did that 20 years ago, and forget the details.
5) Initially, MANY drop and refills, about 8 @ 200kms gap, then annually after that.
6) ALL the coolant hoses, especially the one under the Inlet manifold. That will be original, and if it goes on the Autobahn, the engine will be history.
7) Have a look at the stickies at the top of this section, there will be one to download in there I reckon.
8) Drain and refill the diff oil, steer fluid, and do them annually, never go wrong.
9) Brake fluid flush, and then annually.
Enjoy the car, the be an awesome beast.

Welcome to the forum, Roennow! 2nd everything Grant said. Have a browse through the "Stickies" at the top of the X300 Forum. Much of what you ask is covered there. Additionally, the search button in the upper right corner will be of incredible use as the occasional niggling problem crops up.
To amplify Grant's comment on what we affectionately call the "b*st*rd" hose, do not EVER disregard the red Coolant Low Level warning light on the right side of the guages. Most common for it to blow under application of full throttle for a spirited acceleration. But the coolant dial will stay in the middle until coolant hits 220F or better before it starts up toward the red end, and that only if there is coolant to sense. If, via failure of the b*st*rd hose, most coolant has flown the coop, you probably won't see that dial move much whilst cooking your engine down into molten metal.
But a quick caution - I've changed the 15-20 yr old OEM hose pre-emptively on a couple of cars and had to re-do the job within 6 months. Replacements just aren't that good.

Point # 4 if you look from the top down through the engine You may see a gap in the steering rack mounting and how it's trapped between 2 X's
You'll have to have a light source from the ground to see through the gap
The shims you can slip in without removing the rack
The # I have for the shims is SPC1059
