Default Noise -- the timing chain tensioner or?

Hi All,

After fixing the steering on our '95 VDP, I took it for a test drive. I rarely drive the car because my daughters use this car, but I noticed there is a sound/noise I've been meaning to figure out.

It doesn't make the noise at start up, or if you rev the car in park, it only does it on acceleration while driving and starts around 2000 rpm. If I had to describe it, the term 'sewing machine in a beer can' is the only thing that comes to mind.

Any ideas?

See the thread on start up noise, it's getting away from startup and onto your problem. I believe these cars has a habit of making a 1500 to 2200 RPM timing buzz for lack of a better term. Mine started it doing it early in its life, tried another tensioner with no luck. Not going to change the chains and guides just to have it do it again. Quality oil and higher viscosity seem to help.

I concur with JTsmks.
Much of the chat on here relates to the upper chain tensioner, but I think the noise you are describing is attributable to the lower tensioner and guides. I replaced mine, along with the chain, and the noise like yours went away. Not a 5 minute job though, and in truth a lot of work for a "fault" which doesn't appear to be mission critical.

hello,
I have the same issue with the lower tensioner.
(The upper chain tensioner is new. No noise at cold or hot start.)
I heard a kind of light rattle/noise between 1900 to 2200 rpm (especially during acceleration)
Is it just annoying or is it dangerous?
the replacement of the upper chain tensioner was cheap. But the eventual replacement of the lower chain tensioner is very expensive.
I would like to do it only if it is necessary

many thanks
